Just tried the Ruy Lopez opening and ended up beating somehow ranked higher than me. Took a while to develop the win but got it.

Is there such thing as best opening?
No there is not. But if you have a favorite opening then you can reasonably call it best. This is what everyone else is doing.

There is no true best opening. The objective of the opening is to set you up for success in the middle game, where most games are really won. The important thing is to do the opening correctly, and be aware of possible traps.
There are some really bad openings. A bad opening is one that experienced players know how to counter in a punishing way. For example, if you are playing black and your opponent opens with the queen's gambit, the Marshall Defense is one that leads to a good player chasing your knight around while developing, and put your position in a deep hole. (So, if you like to play the queen's gambit, it's worth learning how to punish an unsuspecting Marshall Defense player!)

I can't necessarily say it's best, but my favorite opening is the Italian Game.
I am disappointed in you man, how could you betray us like that.
