‘En passant’ literally means ‘while passing’, ‘by passing’ or ‘by the way’

Essentially if a pawn is pushed two squares so that a neighbouring opposing pawn(one square to the left or right: in this case it is neighbouring after the push) the opposing neighbouring pawn can perform en passant and capture the pushed pawn as if it only moved one square. This is to prevent getting passed pawns too easily without tactic.
