is chess actually fun 🤔


Depends what you mean by fun... is you enjoy tying your brain in knots over what to play next then yes. Which I quite like. Whilst I like chess I think there are more fun games, like Scrabble, poker and video games.

Woody Allen's story "The Gossage-Vardebadian Papers" is the supposed correspondence between two chess players having a correspondence match. It becomes obvious they are not really playing the same game. They accuse each other of insanity if not of cheating, and it is clear they are both hyper-competitive to the point of madness. They are not having fun at all - things are way beyond that. They each claim at the end to have checkmated the other. Then one suggests they try playing Scrabble, but things get off to an equally competitive start...
