Are you entertained?  Are you entertained?

The proverbial do nothing spectator.  What about the substance of what is being discussed in this topic.  Won't you contribute your thoughts?

Do you really believe for one second that you along with every body else on this planet that you are not permanently enrolled in the school of hard knocks.  You can't withdraw or flunk out of this school.  Once you are born you are enrolled and you can never leave until you die.

Substance? Still waiting to see it.

ok, so dedication definetely counts for most of your strength, but after around 2200-2300 FIDE, then intelligence and natural skills become more important to improve even further. Of course, you will still have to be truly dedicated, but after that rating then intelligence plays a more prominent role.

Based on a percentage zero being lowest and ofc 100 being highest. Anywhere between 3% - 8% academically.

I have not, nor shall I, read, watch gain help...etc etc to improve my skills in chess.

You can draw your own opinions on the information in which I believe to be fairly accurate.

If there were a cateogary = fun.

That's my slot. Cheers : )))

This, coming from one wearing no clothes.

Timmy, it's a different way of thinking, when you can wear no clothes. I live on the Gold Coast in queensland. Beautiful one day, perfect the next. I am usually only wearing board shorts for 8 months of every year. It is how it is.

I cannot make you feel better because you seem not to be as fortunate, Timmy, not my fault either.

I can, I do. I always have!

Great lifestyle : )

Wow! No, let me say that again; " WOW! "

Some time back I followed an argument on a particular video on Youtube; the argument went on for quite some time until the owner of the video removed all comments; now no one can comment! The thing about the argument was; it started when one fella started to disrespect another poster over a badly constructed sentence; in essence, an argument over syntax. This fella took it the wrong way and a ridiculous amount of retorts ensued.

I like to ponder life's riddle; I like to try and understand what makes something ' tick. ' I really have no time for arguments because at the end of the day, they don't really accomplish anything.

They are usually started by a person that feels inferior to the person they are about to disrespect. That person finds an angle to aim for to forward  their frustrations; because it IS frustrations and it's easier to pass that negative energy onto someone else, rather than deal with it internally.

It really is good to talk; it's good to have an adult discussion. Through intelligent discussion we ourselves learn and progress our knowledge; we evolve our own understanding and when we understand more, we want to learn more and thus this particular positive cycle becomes self perpetuating.

Banter is good between like-minded people; it promotes a sense of well-being, however, conversely; sarcasm; aggression and down right rudeness, reduces the sense of well-being.

I started these topics ( I have a couple of others too ) because I want to hear other people's views and ideas, so that I myself can progress my chess play. I am open to other people's ideas and also up for a bit of friendly banter, but to try and bring down someone elses self worth is unacceptable and it is most definitely bloody rude!

I have nothing further to add and as far as this particular topic goes; I'm done.

Like any thing dedication is more important but if you want to be one of those great chess players you need a both dedication and intelligence to grasp the subject to a expert level.

Both of theseWink

I had a player in my club who is mentally challenged ,he goes to a special school and has same speech deficiency,He play in tournaments, play standard level ,is about 1600 OTB rating, never give up,but is extremely good at blitz chess. Remember Me to the" Rain man" movie.Nothing to do with the IQ in this case.

APawnCanDream

I'm more of the persuasion that if IQ is your capacity to learn then the higher your IQ the greater chance you will learn a lot about things. But you still have to sit down and learn things, so dedication seems to be the primary means of a good chess player. Was it Kasparov who once said that dedication is a natural talent? In my mind if one is dedicated one can learn most anything, maybe one will need to have a higher IQ to become one of the absolute best, but certainly all who have a good work ethic could achieve a good understanding of chess.

Hey Daz Batty you are sounding really pompous. What is this 'adult discussion', something children can't have? Or the dregs of emotionally-drained socially stunted ex-beings who drone on to each other in an act devoid of sentiment but pandering to your ideas of social convention? I would say, Think Outside The Box Mate, but I am afraid you ARE the box.
