Obviously I won the game because he blundered his queen, I'm not posting this to show off I just want people's opinions on how I played up to then.

At move 9, d pawn should have taken c3.  The rest are mistakes on white's part.  Play a better opponent next time.

Thanks for the advice, it was an open seek and he was in my rating range. I think your comment is a bit vain. Why should I of taken c3?

One basic rule is that you don't want 2 pawns on the same column.  At move 9, you have a pawn at e7 and e4.

I somewhat agree with you but I felt my d5 push helped gain more centre control regardless of the two pawns being on the same column.

You did terrible. You should have taken the free pawn in 5th move...

there was no free pawn in the 5th move.

5...dxc3? 6.Bxf7+! And White is better. Don't take that Pawn in this case.

He wn't be able to stop you from playing d5 after you take...

For starters I shouldn't of taken the free pawn. Secondly, why do you have to be so rude. This is a chess forum which is meant to help people receive advice. Just saying I played terribly and then giving me a wrong peice of information isn't exactly a logicial and humane thing to do now is it?

4...Nxd4 and black is better in all possible continuations.

Many of these comments are silly.  You played well.  I don't disagree with any of your moves.  Two pawns up, you're allowed to play solid and develop, which you did.  Even if the opponent didn't lose their queen you were on your way to winning.

As for the opening, even if 5...dxc 6.Nxc3 (missing the tactic on f7), white has compensation for the pawn, so it's not even worth talking about.  The way you played is right.

And it's not about doubled pawns.  The d pawn isn't saying on the board anyway.  It's about being sure you can put a pawn in the center (black wants d5 at some point) and development.  5...Nf6 is development and you can still play d5 later.  5...dxc3 accelerates white's development and adds two white pieces onto d5, forcing you to settle for a smaller center with d6.

And in any case, your moves were main line stuff.

13...Ng4 14.Rf1 seems to hold everything together, does it not?

Zigwurst

True

I don't know. I think OP is an idiot who doesn't like free pawns.

Pulpofeira

Maybe do you mean "pawns for free"? :)

Benzodiazepine

I prefer "free pawns".

He's in good company.  A quick search shows Anand, Karpov, Karjakin, and Grischuk played 5...Nf6 in that position.
