Why did the analysis reveal that my Ne5 (3rd move) was inaccurate? Isn't that a better move than the recommended e6 against this blatant f7 attack?

I did some analysis of the game and the Ne5 move. I think you worry a little too much about it, but anyway, the reason why it's not the best move (and still a good move, I really really repeat myself ) is mainly that that the knight can be more active in the future in the board: black has got better plans for it. Also, the other two good moves (e6 and Nf3) are pushing another idea, conquering the d5-square, without taking away all the possibilities of the knight. And I think thats the other key: never take away your possibilities, if you have a chance to maintain many threats: in the other two lines white could have played Ne5 any time if it was needed. Meanwhile, Ne5 led to unneeded simplifications leading to a more drawish line.

And last, but not least: don't trust the engines too much, especially not in the openings as they can't calculate far enough there. Also, if you can't find out why a move is winning/losing according to the computer, don't worry too much about it. Anyway, hope you get something out of this!

The move 3...Ne5 is such an inaccuracy.

What was you thinking when playing such a move!

What a terrible move.

It is obvious the move 3...e6 is the best move in this position.

Even little blind kids in africa can see the move 3...e6 is the move here.

3...Ne5 such a dubious move.

It should be labeled as 3...Ne5?!

#4 Thanks for the explanation! I really appreciate the comments and the analysis. (For that, I won't spoil the ending of Superman v Batman for you - I dragged my wife to the theater earlier today.)

By the way, you may be too far ahead to remember how utterly impatient beginners are. I love developing pieces and waiting for a counter-attack, especially against aggressive players, but once I see this f2/f7 attack coming, I forget everything from the video lessons and start doing...something... I don't have a good defense against this - I just muddle my way through, hoping for my opponent to be as blunder-prone as me.

And again, thanks so much for the analysis.

Haha no problem, and you don't have to worry about spoiling the superman v Batman :D and yeah, I understand it's hard to get away from the old manners, you just have tp focus extra much in similar positions in the future–im sure you can do it!
