Hello chess.com community. I was just wondering if you guys could help me figure out where I went wrong in a game I played against someone during LiveChess. Any constructive comments will be greatly appreciated. Thankyou.

I think for a blitz game you played pretty well. I think putting the queen on the c2 square was your downfall. Careful about putting the queen on an open line in front of your opponents rook . Maybe Rook to c1 would have been better on move 13 then since the knight would have not been pinned  and worst case you could have moved it back to b1 for maybe a follow up to d2. Or Maybe Knight to b5 on move 13 with the idea of getting it centralized on the d4 square where no pawns can push it away. Anyway that is what most stood out for me.

First. Thankyou for your post. I think that I should have moved the knight to b5 with the idea of getting it to d4. I do think, however, that the rook move to c1 would be wrong because it would lose me a pawn. A possible variations or two could be:

13. Rc1? Bxc3 14. Bxc3 Qxa2

or

13. Rc1? Bxc3 14. Rxc3 Qxa2

But I guess that these variations would leave us with an equal game or something close to equal since I gained a pawn during the opening.

your big mess up is #13 because it set u up for mutiple comeplications your next mistake is letting him trade of alot when he had the material advatage!!!

3. cxd5 loses the initiative for you. Better is to keep going with your development. dxe6 also helps Black. If you watch how the game continues from that point, you can see how Black uses his development advantage and immediately tries to cash with the c5 push and putting pressure on your centre. If Black sits passively by, you can consolidate your position and your centre pawns will become a strong positional foundation. Black hits on the right plan and immediately loosens up your centre so he can use his better developed pieces to start creating threats. I think better a 7 may have been Be2, then castle and work on development from there. 10. Bc2 looks good, it gets the bish on a strong diagonal. d4 is safe due to the h7 discovered check. Hope these ideas are helpful.

Yes. Thankyou for that post Munchies. I realize now that I did give the initiative to a higher rated player although I had a material advantage of a pawn. I did not expect him to cede me a pawn but instead thought it would be played like the Marshall Defense in the Queens Gambit that we transposed into. I thought that the variation to be played would be:

 3.cxd5 Nxd5 4. e4

Where black would be forced to move his knight again giving me the initiative and good central conrol. But you have enlightened me that he purposely gave up a pawn to gain the initiative. I was wondering why such high rated player would purposely give up a pawn. Now I've learned. Thankyou for your post.

The big thing I see in this game is you didn't come out on top with exchanges.  18. b5 was a good move, it forces you to give up either the bishop or the rook.  Then, after 32. Re1, black is very willing to trade down rooks, leaving white with very uncoordinated material.  However, black was a strong opponent, and these attacks were well planned. Nicely played ayjaraki
