Interesting.  I've seen this before, but useful to know if someone plays the Owen Defence.

The foundation of that trap is just a tactical trick used in the Grob Attack by White. Owen's Defense is sort of a reversed Grob Attack.

3...Nf6! should be played.

3...f5? is of course a big mistake.

6...Bg7 is Black's only move, when white has a few good moves. Best is the mildly surprising 7.Qf5!

Nice. You have to bank on black playing f5.

Nobody is going to play 3. ...f5

I recently saw this in a video and I don't understand why anyone should play f5. Is there a plausible reason for black to play f5? I tried to create this situation but not a single person in the last 10 owens def games play f5.

As someone who plays the Owen's on a regular basis, none of us are play f5 like this. 3...e6 or 3...nf6 is the mainline and gives black a lot of chances.

a more common name is Matovinsky gambit

Even if you get to the point of whites pawn on g6, Black can create luft with d7 to d6, then trade rook for the origjnal queen and wiggle out of the issue from there with the dark square bishop protected by the queen and the white rook still threatened by the black bishop - or am I missing something obvious? Unless white plays absolutely perfectly its very dangerous for them, one wrong move gives up the queen or at least black gets to take back more of what was lost along the way...
