Using time to inflate your rating?

I did okay in this game. obviously my biggest error was 25.Qxh8, where i should have moved 25.Qxg5.

Im not much for complaining over a loss, however i feel the game was rushed, considering the 24hour timer.  I accepted the game without checking the timer, being so used to issuing and recieving chalenges that are set to 3 days.  The game almost didnt make it this far, one weekend, when i just barely logged in with 6min to move.

The thread subject is questioned, because i looked at this players rescent games, and noticed most of them were a win by time.  I understand, shame on me for accepting the challenge if 24 hours is to rushed for me, but is this fella really rating in the 1500's? Or is his rating tactically inflated? Thoughts?

Feel free to evaluate the game. I think I played all right, and my resignation was due to the fact that I dont think I could have won, after his pawn turns qeen.

Thanks :)

Maybe the person just prefers to play a game over the course of a day. When I play my friends online we usually sit out the whole game if we can regardless of the time controls.

That said, why do you care what someone else's rating is? Just play, have fun, and strive for personal improvement. Fighting on the internet is like the Special Olympics. Even if you win, you're still retarded.

I love 24 hour games.  I wish chess.com would offer a speed chess option.  That is, 5 minute games.  That would be great.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not looking for a fight, and I don't care all that much... and frankly, you're coming back at me with as much hostility as you assume I'm going at him with.  Relax, just cause you can reply doesn't mean you need to do so with animosity in your tone.  (same goes for me of course.)

It's cool to play a game over the course of a day, in fact if you can do it, great, but thats not whats going on. he's looking for a minimum of one turn per day, and for the most part, hes not getting it. If hes persisting to challenge people with a 24 hour clock, because he knows 50% of the time they'll miss a turn, I question his rating. In fact, looking over a few of the games on his recent list, he was losing (by pieces), but won because of time.   Its those wins that inflate his rating and rose the question for me.

Why do i care? on an individual basis, I don't.  on the whole, our rating determines our skill level, and the ranges we set when we issue a challenge determine our opponent.   I'd like to think the ratings are accurate... at least somewhat.

In the end, I've only myself to blame, I accepted the challenge, and probably shouldn't have.

@Sir_Albert

Hey, if you can do it, thats awesome.  Do you find a lot of people can't complete the game and lose to time?

queenofdeath

YOU OPENING in this IS HORRIBLE....if you played chess partner the chess on here ON EASY... It would destroy you.... I highly suggest you study and research openings 1 hour a day at a min, to expand your game.... nothing will happen with out doing that...

FIRST OF ALL.... YOU WAISTE TEMP0 LIKE IT'S THE FEDERAL GOVEMENT... aside from that.... TIME IS A PIECE... and the game HERE WAS NEVER EVEN CLOSE, TIME OR NOT... sorry but your entire post is a miss... you are opening yourself to feedback and I am just flat out giving you it.... hope you enjoyed it have a good day!

FLAT OUT, YOU SHOULD read all details, and get over it... if you dont move in time then you loose.... TIME IS A PIECE... you should check out corrisondence chess witch is done by mail and can take months to complete... this is where you study and study and study each move like it was life or death and maybe this will vive you some mental relief... aside from that move on, and play another 10,000 games and stop looking at the half empty aspect of the chess world...

you can play anything from one minute games upwards in live chess on this site.  Just go to play in the top menu bar and select live chess.  Better download firefox browser like they recommend on the entry page though, I got disconnected a lot using Internet explorer

Um, not to be a jerk, but old jokes at the expense of people with disabilities is in rather poor taste.

That being said, I totally agree with the rest of your comments. It seems counter-productive to spend time worrying about whether someone is gaming the system or "deserves" his rating.

@queenofdeath

Wow... hostile. Time is a piece.  Okay, I get it, once was enough. And yes, I should have read all details before accepting the challenge. It's why I said "its my own fault." You desire to be in the top 50... realize arrogance and a condescending attitude isn't a prerequisite.  I play chess as a hobby, I'm no expert, nor will I ever be, its called realistic, a concept I'm not so sure you've managed to grasp.  Realize, when you critique the game, its being played by two people with a 1300-1500 rating... if you compare us to masters and more experienced players, were sure to make mistakes. rather then tell people they suck, try being constructive. and FYI, I'm looking at the half empty aspect of online chess, dumbass.

Just to digress further, I'm guessing you're a victim of poor public schooling.  It's WASTE and GOVERNMENT.  Perhaps, since you disapprove, you should write a letter to congress, requesting something be done in your area to further education.

@ couple of others, thanks for responding, yes i meant to say 25.Qxe7.

I'm not worrying or complaining, I'm questioning an online rating system.  Over the months I've been here I've heard scams such as people using the computer to calculate their next best move for them rather then using their brains.  Ive read of people going on vacation mode out of spite... and i was curious on anyones thoughts about using time, to gain an advantage.  If you want to think like Queen-y up there, time is a piece, and all's fair in war.  I know next time ill not accept the shorter timed games.

Thanks for responding.

Queen of death, i agree with you, but you don't have to be quite so insulting.

I think you took my attempt at lightheartedness as animosity. I was simply trying to put things in perspective for you. No one likes to lose, but you gotta let it go man. If you feel like this guy is unfairly inflating his ratings, just don't play him again.

Chess_Lobster

You're pretty touchy for someone whose entire post is a baseless acussation that someone is scamming people for rating points.

dwaxe

It is a baseless accusation with no evidence...

You have the ability to check your opponent's profile, and see if his wins are on time or actually winning.

Most people do that first, then post a topic that shows the username of the person you are accusing.

Chess_Lobster
Im not sure if I'm reading your post correclty, but there's a big difference between saying player X wins a lot of games on time (though 1 day per move is very very reasonable) and saying person X's deliberate strategy is to set a low timer so he can win games beyond his talent.
Olimar

to be honest... ratings dont really matter unless your a pro.  For example, I have played kids rated 1400+ who played much worse than some 800s... all it means is free points for you :)  And lets face it.. if you REALLY wanted to get points just make several accounts, have them all play yourself and you can get a 2400+ rating in no time.

That said, I understand what your saying, but lets face it, it you time out it isn't anybody's fault but yours.

About 95% of my wins are because of time. Finish what you start!
