I don't know what was happening in Bonn - since I don't keep up with these things but ... whatever it was, I feel fairly confident that databases were being used. They impinge on just about every complex human activity these days.

I'M ALSO WILLING TO ENGAGE THE NON-USERS AT THEIR OWN TERMS (THAT IS, OTB-LIKE) AND AT LEAST 1 DAY/MOVE... AND PLEASE, MATCH ME WITH A PLAYER WITH MORE OR LESS THE SAME RATING, IF THERE'S ANY. (RIGHT NOW I'M AT 2484 BUT WITH A LOSING GAME, I'LL DROP TO THE LOW 2400s).

ALSO, I DON'T NEED TO WAIT FOR THE PROPOSED MATCH TO START. I'M READY TO PLAY NOW! SEND ME A MESSAGE SO I CAN RESET MY SETTINGS.

The Friendship War, if it has to prove anything, is to experience friendship by-through-beyond the royal game.

And if you're really up to a game now, accept a challenge from a lowly 1600s - me. (I hope I can make you think harder, if not at all create a draw with you.)

Non-Users group is still only 66% of the size of the Users group. Users will be issuing a Team Match challenge mid-week - in which everyone will be free to use or not use. Doubtless Non-Users will be issuing a challenge on their own terms.

Within a Team Match, players are ordered by rating so the strongest from one team plays the strongest from the other, and so on through to the lowest rated. Provided groups have at least a few dozen members, and they play other groups of a similar size and strength, then Team Matches ensure a fairly balanced contest. Some proposals have been discussed here (http://www.chess.com/forum/view/help-support/first-come-first-served-team-chess) to achieve a fairer competition between groups of different sizes.

The recent World Championship match happened in Bonn. Databases were not used during the actual games but they were certainly being used in preparation for the games.

Artfizz, with the 30 per day limit on invitations, I've just sent 60 invitations to the Non-Users. I'll be done inviting the total of 100 by Tuesday. Regards.

I use Opening Instuctor which is over rated mostly main line stuff and about 60 books and looking for more. I subscribe to chesslecture.com where I picked up a Scandinavian as white and have not lost with it, a combo of the Dragon and najdorf called the "Dragdorf". I do have an engine which I use after losses and I dick around with It studying openings. I will say the positions with the engine are a little  confusing to me, they are so diffent than what I'am used to. For me I'am interested in themes and opening setups so I can follow a plan and with a engine it looks like I'am not going to get my moneys worth. For example at chessworld.net  game 5401235 thedodge vs musao11   I'am thedodge learned this setup from chesslecture.com now of course they dont say much about 5...bxa3 but in preparation I ran it through the engine. Move 8.Ra4 is not a engine move It shows how uncomfortable I am playing those positions I said srew it and played 8.Ra4. Now I have no theme or plan to go by I'am going to have to get lucy and that tells you preety much what I think of engines.

I study books for openings, tactics etc., but I use no help at all in an actual game. I can't help what the other person does but I would really rather play mind against mind instead of playing against Kasparov, or Fischer, or Tal and Karpov's greatest lines, or the taboo chess engine. Anyone can beat me if you memorize an entire Anand database but what can you do when you just play chess?

Pick any group, based around any concept, and there are almost certainly at least a dozen more groups with the same idea ... e.g.

Win or Lose on your own

Circle of Trust OTB

Tally Team Non-Users

So Anand spent more on his dual-core box than Kramnik? It's clear who won the war of preparation.

A few more slots left... and on we go!

For me, CC (or equivalent) and OTB are two different games.  I view OTB as 'true chess', where one learns how good they are.  CC is a training environment.  I use books and databases, and any tool that provides more direct experience with studying, learning, and better understanding sound play.  An engine that just spits out the 'best' move is across MY line.

Once out of the opening and the 'book' or database variations (which can be studied and are often well commented) it's just me.  After that I have the time to select middle and end game moves but use no tool once out of the books.

I'm a non-user
