Another lesson from my lack of endgame skill

Sort:
BlackWarmaster

I am very very very very poor on endgame knowledge.
Played a 10 mn game yesterday, with no time increment. Finished the game with King + rook vs lone king.

Now it seems really obvious to me how to mate with only a rook + king ( opponent king in a corner + my king at knight distance + rook on the first file/column). But yesterday, I was running really low on time, and not my opponent. And I totally lost my nerves, no way to retrieve how to do in seconds.
So, ok, proposed a draw, because anyway, if I can't retrieve the mate, I don't deserve the win, totally fair with it. But my opponent declined, as he was seeing I was struggling with time. He wanted to make me lose this ridiculous way.  Ok, my fault. I'm just angry at myself, even if it's really not glorious from him.
At the end, I just finished retrieving how to achieve the mate, he saw it and resigned (or was it a mismanipulation.. don't know and don't care).

For the anecdote : He wanted a rematch. I usually never refuse any challenge or rematch, because it's like a chess rule of honour to me. But here, honour was obviously not a priority, so I declined, the same way he declined my draw proposal. But ok, will try to rematch him tonight, as today is another day.

Anyway, my lesson of today :

Always follow the DNUTIOEYSR rule.

Which means

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE IMPORTANCE OF ENDGAME YOU STUPID RETARD.
Just bought a endgame book. Not the first time I lose a game where I was better the whole game and ended spoiling it at the end. But here, it was too ridiculous.

The worst that could happen wenv you have a king plus rook vs a king, is that when you run out of time the game will be a DRAW OF TIME OUT VS INSUFFICIENT MATERIAL,,,, so MR endgame there was no need for you to even offer a draw, it was going to come by default

Just checked, indeed you re right, didn t know about this rule. Quite logical, glad it exists.

Thanks Fork_master

op- have you tried the drills section on endgames here on chess.com?

basically, you can select a specific type of endgame (k+p vs king etc) and you play the position vs stockfish

it is brutally helpful; you can even do some checkmates with it (not sure where the k+rook vs k) is in endgames or checkmates but do get yourself over there

the worst thing is trying to calculate and reinvent the wheel when we are low on clock in a winning position where that position could be owned in out memories

curiously, k+r vs k is my wheel house; i drew a game recently where i promoted to queen but had to negotiate some stalemates and ran out of clock so if i know i can get the game there i sometimes promote to a rook just to be safe

good luck

yes I tried, but way too limited for non premium members. But I just bought the Van Perlo's endgame tactics book. Thanks anyway for the advice

"casual player" = around 1500-1600 rating.

Thanks for this fantastic statement, again, very useful. Go read a dictionary, and look at "casual".

Do you have problems with low rated people, or it's just you don't have anything intelligent to share elsewhere ?

"... I'm convinced that Silman's [Complete Endgame Course] will take its place in history as one of the most popular endgame books ever. It has already caught on with the average player in a big way, confirming Silman's status as the king of instructional writers. Silman's idea is to wait until you climb in strength before you worry about more advanced material. Then, as a Class 'E' player (that's 1000-1199), one must learn ... Silman's book emphasizes to the student that the important thing is to master the strictly limited material at hand, rather than get confused by endings that won't help your results at that level. Thanks Klauer !

edit - Actually looked back at your diagrams, still quite usefull, thanks a lot!

It's ok for these ones, I put my king in opposition, bring the opponent's king in a corner, mine at a knight distance and put the rook 1st line. Actually I try to study one "basic" endgame each few days. Yesterday it was Two bishops vs lone king. I drilled it, now I can do it in a blitz condition.

The ones I struggle more with are the ones where there are several kinds of minor pieces remaining. So A specific tactical approach needed, as drilling is only possible on a very few specific cases.

People like you are the biggest issue with chess community. There are so many people playing chess who think they are some sort of superior intellects, just because they are good at playing chess. Newsflash for you: Belittleing other people doesn't make you look either smart nor cool. It makes you look like a dork with substantial shortcomings on the emotional aspects of intelligence.

We were all beginners once, and some of us still are. If you want to gain some sort of respect for your amazingly high chess rating, try giving helpful advice to people below your skill level, instead of mocking them for not having played the game as much and for as long time as you.
