Kmoch is on the Archive. I also found his book on a free download through pdfcoffee dotcom. Thanks, Blue Emu. I think this is just the book that I need.

You read my warning, yes?

This book expects the student to WORK. In return, you can look forward to increasing your understanding of the game enormously, and to an eventual rating increase (after you've struggled with the text material and finally defeated it) of hundreds of points.

Step one is to learn a new language. Not kidding. Kmoch invents his own terminology for Pawn structures.

Twin. Ram. Duo. Phalanx. Chain. Lever. Leucopenia. Melanpenia. Head-duo. Base. Outpost. Lee. Luff. Frontspan. Rearspan... all of these terms have highly specific, narrowly focused meanings in Kmoch's lexicon. You'll have to learn what the words mean.

But it's worth it, because once you understand the "language", it's possible to convey an enormous amount of conceptual content in a few words... example: "Lacking a base- or head-duo, White's chain is naturally prone to leucopenia". That one sentence conveys a lot of meaning... IF you understand what concepts the individual words in the sentence stand for.

If you read all V volumes of My Great Predecessors using a chessboard and trying to understand all the variations I guarantee you’ll be 1800

@Blue Emu If I can absorb it before I die I will die a happy man. I don't mind the work, but my brain seems to object more and more lately.

1800 is a long way. First get to 1000. Any books on basic tactics are the most important resource for this first phase.

Fred Reinfeld’s 1001 series (sacrifices, checkmates—different books) have helped generations of players get there. There are other books, of course. Find something that you have the motivation to work through.

I like the Russian Chess School series, The Manual of Chess Combinations. http://chessskill.blogspot.com/2023/02/the-manual-of-chess-combinations.html

Allegedly, volume two can get you to 2000. More than just these books will be needed, of course.

Chances are good that if you’re rated 600, something more basic might be needed first. Books designed for scholastic players by John Bain, Jeff Coakley, or Al Woolum are all good choices. I also like Dean Ippolito, Chess Tactics for Scholastic Players. The books by these four experienced coaches offer the training needed to get you to 1200. Once you work through these elementary books, Yakov Nieshtadt, Improve Your Chess Tactics would be an excellent choice.

Don’t neglect books focused on checkmate patterns. Two stand well above all the rest: Renaud and Kahn, The Art of the Checkmate and Victor Henkin, 1000 Checkmate Combinations. Antonio Gude, Fundamental Checkmates is as good, so I should have said three stand above the others. Everything else on the topic is either not as good, or serves well as a supplement to these.

After you get to 1000, this is a good choice.

There’s an incisive review at http://chessskill.blogspot.com/2013/01/logical-chess-book-review.html

I mean to get to 1000, then 1200, then 1400, then 1600, then 1800. Anything helps me. Just please recommend anything to help me get better
