Congratulations Mrhikarunaku... on your moving to vatican city from India... must have taken much study...

Anyway... any famous Chess alcoholic? Anybody who could still win reeking of drink, slumped at the board, lol... bonus point if they played KID.

Peating is how Scotch gets that “tastes like licking an ashtray” flavor characteristic of some bourbons.

A couple of days ago, a question was raised about the role of dry vermouth in a dry martini.

Winston Churchill liked his super dry, so he would pour the gin while looking at a bottle of vermouth on the other side of the room. Tonight, mine are drier. I poured the gin while reflecting on the fact that I’m out of vermouth.

Hey Ziryab,

What do you think of Cosmos?  I’ve been drinking those for the last few days.  They seem to be a little more popular than martinis here in SoCal.

I drank them at home during large parties about fifteen years ago. Lots of family at the parties. The Cosmos were helpful. I seem to recall that grapefruit juice is in the drink. Doesn't mix well with statins. No more for me. My preference runs to simpler drinks, anyway.

Are whiskey snob worse than wine snob? Am sure Ironic and Optimissed would love this discussion... they aren't blocked, must have taken huff or something.

News of 949’s demise has been greatly exaggerated, though I can’t speak for Opti...

Take it from 949...

I’ve drank enough red wine to fill two large swimming pools.  Those who drink wine, especially the ones who think they understand it, are the biggest snobs in the world of drunks.  Although, going to wine country is quite fun.  It’s like adult Disney Land.

So, Lion, earlier you were asking about Kentucky.  And yes, 949 has been to Bourbon.  They have Whiskey tasting trail, just like wine country.  This too, is very fun.  Now Lion, here’s something you may not know about Bourbon Whiskey:

1) It must be made in Bourbon, Kentucky.  This is why Jack Daniels, while being whiskey, is not Bourbon, because it’s made in Tennessee.  Although, they have a premium whiskey that’s pretty good.  They call it Gentlemen Jack, However it cannot bear the name Bourbon.

2) Bourbon must Also age in brand spanking new oak barrels for a minimum of 4 years.  This is the reason why you must always drink Bourbon NEAT.  Never drink Bourbon on the rocks.  That destroys the flavor.

3) Scotch whisky should always be “on the rocks”. The reason is because Scotch is made in older oak barrels.  Consequently, it develops a Pete moss flavor and bouquet.  This is enhanced when Scotch is served on ice.  Very yummy!

4) The problem is that most bartenders don’t know how to properly serve Scocth.  They punch a bunch of small ice cubes into the glass like their making a Pepsi drink for a kid, which waters the flavor down too quickly.

5) Scotch should be served with only one large ice cube.

While playing OTB chess, a gentleman should be smoking a cigar while drinking Scotch, Bourbon, or Port in the manner described above.  Perhaps we should even be wearing 3-piece suits?>>>

I've been walking for four days around Wasdale in the English Lake District. Just got back. I really like Malt Scotch whisky (usually drunk neat with no ice but occasionally with either an ice cube or with tap water) and various wines but I can't afford to buy the wine I'd like, which would be expensive French chateaux. Good whisky is generally cheaper. I also like Champagne and good English bitter beer served warm. Well, 12 degrees Centigrade or so. Cellar temperature.

And which cigar is best... cuban?

Avatar of Optimissed

Definitely. I liked Punch when I still smoked them.

I'd recommend taking coenzyme Q₁₀, if you're not already, if you're still taking statins. Inhibiting HMG–CoA reductase prevents the synthesis of all isoprenes, not just sterols, resulting to a concomitant reduction in coenzyme Q₁₀. Most side‑effects consequent of statin use are secondary to coenzyme Q₁₀ inhibition, with sterol reductions having less significance due to dietary intake.

Some mushrooms can have a substantial amount of statins, enough to lower isoprene synthesis on their own. This has been confirmed in studies using oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) and rabbits, vide infra, so if you ever run out of statins you can always search for mushrooms when turkey hunting.

  • 'The addition of 10% dried fruiting bodies of oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) to the diet containing 1% of cholesterol reduced serum cholesterol levels by 65% and cholesterol content in liver, heart, long extensor muscle and aorta of male rabbits (Chinchilla) by 60, 47, 25 and 80%, respectively. The decrease in total serum cholesterol was affected primarily (by 70%) by reduced cholesterol content in very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) while the contribution of high density lipoproteins (HDL) cholesterol increased by a factor of 3.' ―Bobek, 1999
