Chess Addiction: I'm losing my life to push the wood . . .

I have been playing chess now off and on for more than 30 years, since I was 8 years old. I think chess appeals to me because I have a mind that enjoys solving problems. Sometimes I enjoy creating problems, and then solving the problems I created. "Where is the answer?" is the question that constantly rings in my head, whether I'm playing chess or not.  I'm sure that there are millions of chess players who can identify with this.

My wife, who has known me now for about 20 years, understood my obsession with solving problems before she married me. And I've gotten better over the years at putting chess in its rightful place in my life.  Life has presented me with a number of problems to solve, so over the years my frequency of playing chess has diminished. That being said, I don't think I'll ever go cold turkey. Thank God for the internet!

My friend is a complete chess addict... he planned his holiday in Florida, and the next day he was searching for oncoming tournaments there. LOL

The all too consuming world of chess.  I think at least every serious chess player had Chess to interfere with either one of the following

School Work Significant Other Social Life

I lived in DC a couple of summers ago and would play with a group of guys in Silver Springs, MD at the Starbucks.  It's really funny... we would sit out there and play all night... and if we got tired...we would travel to Dupont Circle and play more.  I'm not married, but the married guys wives would call them and couldn't believe they were possibly out until 2am playing chess!  lol.  We had a discussion...and suprisignly...each person had some conflict with chess and their girlfriend/boyfriend/wife at some point (and the younger players school lol).

So I guess my question is... how did you tame your chess bug?  (or rather... is it tamed at all?  lol)

See the topic below, in which a guy complains about the madness chess makes to him:

I really think chess is a serious addiction, for non-professionals.

If you are not a chess pro, or do not want to become a GM, IM, FM or so, you do not need to take chess too serious.

Chess, for non professionals, could become a serious addiction.

It only steals your time, if you do not make it fun.

Then, the secret is: make chess another way of fun to you, like other games or sports (if you play tennis, golf, you can compare).

Chess is only a fun game for me. I do not study it seriously, I only make fun from it.
