Chess is an affront to God. I've never understood how any devout player justifies the activity.
chess and god
When God created the universe, he created such mysterious things like light and dark matter with a few basic pieces that interact with one another but end up cancelling each other out... ultimately leading to a draw

This is a good point. To play chess is to play God. Imitation may be the purest form of flattery to us, but divinity means never knowing how to accept a compliment.
I don't doubt, that, the Divine, views our fascination, with 'chess'; As we would, look upon, a 'lower' life-form's, obsession, with 'tic-tac-toe'.
Being, obsessed with 'Seirawan'-chess, or 'Go', {the boardgame}, would be more understandable ; From, a 'permutation'/ challenge ; Human, perspective.
Interestingly, at one time the Catholic Church heavily frowned on Chess. May have even considered it sinful. Today, I don't believe their is any such resistance to the game itself.

I've heard similar objections within Islam, on two grounds:
1. Distracting from Salah (prayer times, easily prevented with mindfulness)
2. That it's a game of chance and therefore forbidden (easily refuted by anyone who knows the slightest thing about chess)
God doesn't exist.
Grab some clay and help me make one, then.
