During a tournament it's essential that you manage your time, aswell as your game itself. I find it hard and distracting to watch my clock and make sure that I stay in the timeframe! When I start thinking, time fly!! If anybody have advice to get use to this, please help! I've played in a lot of tournaments, but exp didn't help.
I mark my scoresheet before I start the game. If I am playing 40 moves in 2 hours, then I should be at move 20 in 1 hour. I should be at move 30 in 1.5 hours. If I get ahead in time in the opening, I can use it later in more complicated, critical positions. If I am losing, who cares about time. I will spend more time than necessary and blitz my way out if I find any winning ideas. I once thought I was lost an spent 30 minutes and about to lose on time when I found a winning line. I played it and all the moves and was able to win it, but did not find the winning move until a lot of time was used up. If I am winning, no excuse to lose on time. Have to make quick moves, so long as they are not losing moves, even if I have to repeat the position to gain some time.
