Can GM Resign if they only have 2 pawns and 1 king?

Cherub_Enjel

Resignation is always an option.

White to play or resign ?

What would you do ?

GM_chess_player

Thanks guys.

Interesting question - I'm not sure white could resign in that position ... it could be a draw by not enough material for black, but I'm not sure about white losing.

LouLit

Can't White just play f7#?

Cherub_Enjel

Yes - but the question was : could white resign and lose the game if he/she wanted to?

General-TsoTso

Saw a guy resign in a won position once, only 2400 but it was still painful to see. He thought he was lost but missed a winning combination.

I've confirmed it - chess.com does not apply the insufficient material rule if you press the resign button:

Why on earth would material on the board have any effect on the option to resign?

Such an option would be equivalent to throwing the game, so I was wondering if it would be forced into a drawn result instead.

GM_chess_player

yes

Thank you for the information

Nothing wrong about resigning in a situation where even draw is impossible. Not against rules. No reason to do it either but it is the right of a player. I would be insulted to see such resignation against myself even in a bullet game.
