Here's a little info Tico! It's a short doc about the chess players of Washington Square Park and how they feel about the title "hustler" with a little explanation of their place in the city - https://vimeo.com/33945100
Chess Hustlers

The people at Washington Sq. in NYC are notorious, just watch Searching for BobbyFischer. But they are some great players though. I'm going to try to make a trip there, perhaps in the Fall and do a blog report on it with pictures and maybe an interview or two if I feel comfortable enough. In the past Washington Sq. has had a shade, seedy feel to it with things of an illegal sort but supposedly it's been cleaned up since.

They're usually B-level players with an inflated opinion of their skills.
In San Francisco I played a true hustler and got paid.

What is a B-level player? What is their rating elo wise?

So they're actually pretty good. I mean I don't think I'll ever get to that level in all honesty even if I play everyday.

It's not that hard.
If you're interested in the game over a period of years and put a little work into it you should get there.
The street players have never cracked open a chess book but some of them got pretty good purely by playing. I don't recommend it though.

b= about 1800 ish
you can google it if you want to be more precise.
but yeah.
NO where near a GM.
Vlad. that was a cool vid- really like Marice beating the dude.
so.;... I guess there sometimes not honest either.

This is why I don't like playing chess hustlers. They take the game too seriously and sometimes they'll cheat. I'll never play for money because I don't gamble and because I don't expect them to be sportsmanlike when money is on the line. They're not all like that but when they are they're really annoying to play against.

No that's what I would be scared of. Their sleight of hand is probably so well rehearsed, that it might be hard for a common person to spot it. When he did it in the video, it was super confusing and I wouldn't have noticed it. The GM did a great job on calling him out on it. But I guess a GM always has the board projected in his head.

I don't know... that seems misleading. And when I was new it was always annoying to read people saying how easy it was to be ____ rating.

Yeah I think I should crack open a chess book one day.

Maurice grew up playing people like that so he knows the tricks. Some guys give away the fact that they can do it by castling with this method so you can at least be warned against some people.
Hello Chess People
I've been reading about chess hustlers today on the interweb...has anyone got first hand experience of playing these guys that they'd like to share?
