WHY DO PEOPLE SAY CHESS IS A SPORT?!

Why do you care? So much that you have to type in all caps.

No seriously, where does this obsessive desire to argue endlessly about whether chess is X or not X come from? Chess is chess, if you like it, just enjoy it. Why do you care what other people think of it?

I don’t think it matters if it’s “technically” a sport. I still consider it one 😊

Can't believe peeps still be asking this same question on a Chess site... Serious Chess players and hobbyists will almost always consider this a genre of sport.

Of course it's a sport, the similarities to more "physical" sports (and really, chess is probably no less exerting than for example curling) are larger and more plentiful than the few differences.

The serie system, match rules and tournament structures are almost identical. There are even certain clubs who excel at both chess and other sports. For example, FC Bayern Munich actually won the Bundesliga in both football and chess in '84, '85 and '89. Of course they had different lineups, but they dominated both leagues back then. Now, however, OSG Baden-Baden are basically dominating in the chess league.

The only reason I could see for not considering chess a sport is "But you're not running or throwing stuff around..." and that's really not a good argument.

A sport is in simple and straightforward words, a game of which can get you at least some exercise and keep you healthy. If chess was actually a sport then it would be ridiculous. According to Google Definitions, a sport can mean: "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment."

Chess only covers only one of the criterial matters of this definition, which is of course, skill. But chess does not involve in "physical exertion" which involves running, throwing, and etc.

A sport is an activity or skill that requires physical exertion and has a set of rules and is usually taken competitively. You are exerting your brain when playing chess. You can’t show up to a chess tournament and beat Magnus while eating a Big Mac.

You are missing the word "physical". Physical does not mean mental.

Chess is not a sport or an art, it is a game; an extremely good one but that's all it is.

Chess is a sport…

I agree for the brain only. Some highly physical and specialty activities are also not sports. For instance jack hammering! It takes a great deal of physical strength, stamina, skill to operate one of those things correctly but it still is not a sport.
