words surely exist. i can see them. but the question is if they mean anything. if words exist, their meaning but exist by extension, but we cant know the meaning. sorry!

How can you, who question the existence of chess, possibly accept the existence of everything you see?

Materialists do not believe that concepts, abstractions etc , exist. For them pain does not hurt. It is only C fibers firing. Materialism is neurotic. Obviously, for them chess does not exist. Ironically, materialism is a concept. Therefore, to be a materislist one must not believe in materialism!

OP you said words exist because you can see them.

Does Godzilla exist ?

If there is no god can there be a zilla?

Avatar of fischerman_bob

Materialists believe that words are only patterns of ink. They do not refer to concepts.

There is no meaning (matter lacks intentionality, a piece of matter does not refer to anything.) in anything they say.

Avatar of MonkeyH

So for materialists there is no platonic world?

Avatar of fischerman_bob

Of course not.The Platonic world is not physical

Words do not exist because we do not exist. Words tell us that we must exist. Logic uses words to tell us that we cannot.

Avatar of Catrina-Volokitten

OP wants to know if chess exists.

(A) it does

(B) it doesn't

(C) only as a collection of thoughts

(D) maybe

(E) sometimes.

which would you like ?

Avatar of SamTheScienceGuy

I think (A) it does

Avatar of Catrina-Volokitten

the OP really wants to know, but telling him straight doesn't seem to work :(

If there is a God, does a Zilla have to be?
