I do not know that chess makes you a better person. but for me it gives you a place to put your mind. a place to calm down. which i suppose could make you slightly calmer so maybe so mentally but physically no.
Does chess make you a better person?

Do you ever apply chess principles to your day to day life to improve decision making or strategy?

I walk around in L-shaped knight moves in my day to day life. People think i'm nuts but i can't help it. So i'm not sure chess makes me a better person.

I'll admit I'm not as smart as I used to be. If I had started younger, I'd probably be a better player. But starting to play at 43 my mind isn't on even keel anymore. I forget twice as much as I remember. They call it CRS. Can't remember Squat. Actually it another word but not appropriate or approved for this forum.
I found that the more I think about it, the more similarities there are. It makes me a better decision maker and strategist in real life.
