How a 483 elo became a Co State Champion

Last weekend the 2014 Ohio Grade Level Championship took place. This tournament got off to a bad start after the bad weather caused a delay. However, the real problem was in the 10th grade section. First of all, a little less than half the section was from the same school and they were all unrated. This was slightly unusual, but nobody thought it would be a problem. After the first three rounds, alot of people had perfect scores and all the unrated players had 0. At this point the top players expected to play each other, but instead they were paired against more unrated players. Parents began complaining about this, but nothing was done. This anomaly seemed to be occuring because the computer was set to never pair players from the same school. This lead to all the top players practically always having to play an unrated player. The pairings were done incorrectly however as the rules specifically state that the being from the school exception only applies if they can pair the person with someone from the same point bracket. 2.13 The TD shall avoid pairing players together who are enrolled in the same school whenever possible, but shall not move players to other score groups solely to avoid pairing teammates. Now back to the 483 rated player, who had only played in 3 tournaments before this. In the first round he got a full point bye. Then he won his next four games against all unrated players and tied for first with 5/5. This is a funny and sad story of a very messed up tournament.Pair | Player Name |Total|Round|Round|Round|Round|Round|

Whoah. Why did he have an easier schedule than the 1600?

Avatar of ChessDoofus

This is completely stupid. There should be a playoff tournament or something.

Avatar of isaacthebird

Did you play, if so what grade? I played in 8th grade and got 3.5.

There usually isn't enough time for that kind of thing. I've only seen a playoff maybe once.

Well, the average US player isn't to blame here, so let's say only in USCF and some very few third world countries will things like that happen Laughing

Avatar of SilentKnighte5

He gained more rating points than the other winners, so I think he was the best.
