how do I arrange to play chess games against prison inmates?

I've read stories of college kids who accustom to play chess with prison inmates as part of their extracurricular activities. I'd like to do the same thing. But how would I go about arranging chess games with prison inmates?

But why would you want to play inmates when you can play... anyone else?

Gives them something to do besides learn how to shank people.

lol, yes, if you wanted to something nice for them you might do it, but it's not like they deserve it anyway.

Surely there are a number of incarcerated members right here on chess.com -- the challenge might just be to find them.

Avatar of ivandh

There is certainly a number of intoxicated members on chess.com, the challenge being to have the police find them.

Who are you to say what other people deserve and don't deserve? It is possible that some of those inmates did something morally or legally wrong because their sin/crime served some higher good. Perhaps they stole because they needed money to feed their families. Perhaps they attacked in self-defense. Perhaps they did drugs because they were psychologically broken. Perhaps they got caught attempting to board a plane with a revoked passport!

Doctors do not deserve the intense stress of med school. Does that mean we should not require doctors to have degrees?

The important thing is to improve society, not to keep score on who gets what they deserve.

Sure. But can you explain why it's so easy to dislike me? Is it because I don't go around hating and condemning people? What's wrong with humanistic/judeo-christian values? You don't believe in those things?

Avatar of EternalChess

What is Humanistic/judeo-christian values?

Avatar of ivandh

Those are like the two most opposite things you can have. Judeo-Christians want to have a monopoly on being nice to others which is why they hate humanists so much.

We have the largest prison population per capita in the world.  Some argue this is because some other countries execute vast numbers of convicts.  While that has some merit, an incredibly large percentage of our convicts are in for drug possession or other drug related offenses.  The recidivism rate of drug users is very high as well.
