How long did it take you to get to an 1800 rating?

Some people may not ever reach 1800, and maybe not everyone should invest time into reaching that level. Some people play for fun

It took me a year to get from 800 to 1900. Now half a year later I'm 2100

My over-the board rating:  I am still working on it.  I don't take seriously anything here on chess.com.  I have been playing on and off for 50 years.

I don't get to play OTB officially rated games very often.  And the competition is strong.

A span of nearly 50,000 games to reach 1800 in bullet on Lichess

It took me 10years to reach from 900 to 1800 rapid in chess.com  just by playing and occational reading of chess articles

To the people saying they reached 1800+ in a year, did u guys play in chessclubs to? I notice some of you got otb rating.

So when saying how fast you went from signing up on chess.com dont leave out if you got like 5years of chessclub otb experience before chess.com

I got to 1800 online fairly quickly, under 1 year of "intensive" (debatable) chess study.

Otb - harder to measure. Where do we start? From when i played my first otb? Then that would be ten years.

1800 here will certainly be below 1550 fide.

This is for beginners aspiring to get to 1800 and those interested in data.  How long did it take you to get to an 1800 rating on Rapid, blitz or bullet.  For me it took about a year to get from 900 to 1800.

This quite depends, but I expect the median time to be around 2 to 3 years. At the upper quartile, the duration should be around a year long of time, while at the lower quartile, I doubt it exists (I'm sure more than 25% of the chess population fails to even get past 1500).

I started playing when I was 5. I probably hit 1500 when I was 15. And then I hit 1800 for my first time this year — now that I’m 32.
So… 27 years.

Over a year. Only studied watching hikaru videos. Now, I am taking it seriously and studying books and watching danya's videos which I highly recommend.

around 6 months when I actually started playing seriously

1800 online doesn't mean much. Online chess is a means to an end. OTB chess/ratings are where it's at, and I don't care how much of an elitist that makes me lol

But that's good progress. I assume OP is pretty young so it's to some degree expected, but that's still a lot of points!

I could have gotten there earlier, but I slacked off for a while.

You’re bad

Three months from 1600 to 1800.

Avatar of Kowarenai

honestly i have been playing too much blitz and bullet that just based off my intuition and memorization i just got past 1800 more comfortably in like a few weeks now

It took me a few years to reach 1800 (over-the-board).
