And to think I wandered from reading this thread for a few weeks. It turns out that kuro enjoys quoting himself, tony is still making hilarious 'compositions', and BorgQueen is still answering questions.

Hrm... Who would've guessed?

Aside from the outrageous use of the "QUOTE" button, this thread has come a long way.

On-Topic:

The games and styles of chess that you guys posted were very intruiging, but I'm a traditionalist when it comes to chess, so I will stick to the modern classic chess.

Modern Classic chess?

There's a whole new thread here.....

But they surreptitiously never changed back the rules of Diet Chess.

Unless of course you want some Chess Zero.

Work on these:

History of chess: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_chess

Evolution into modern chess: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess

When they tinkered with the original recipe e.g. by introducing en passant.

Soon they'll re-introduce DICE in the game to force the element of chance in an all-information game. Dumb.

TheGrobe

Can you imagine?  If they used dice to do something like randomly shuffle the starting positions of the peices on the back rank?  Crazy!

All random = senseless. Two Bishops on the same color squares, King outside both Rooks, both sides are not mirror images of one another? Try playing with those rules.

Fischerandom still makes sense but I don't play it myself.

Dice roll to determine which piece to move, where to move it or how far to move it? Might as well play Monopoly instead!

Yeah!  We all know that never caught on.

Even if dice did corrupt chess, we would still have GO

Review of CLASSIC CHESS.

TheGrobe

Is there no room for dice in Go?

chessroboto

You can dice every game actually, including real life! That's what we all do whenever you ride a vehicle to work, cross a busy street or even step outside your home.

dice+Go=Risk

I wouldn't simplfy Go that far. You can't remove stones in Go and all the pieces/stones are of the same value unlike the Risk pieces and troop accumulation per space. I do get the space analogy of both games.

If "they" changed chess significantly, it would have it's own following and chess as we know it would still exist, followed by everyone who simply refuses to change this beautiful game.

Yes, a spin-off variation doesn't mean the end of the first game, nor even necessarily that there might be a schism in players-- there might be a sizable number of people who enjoy playing both an original and the new variation of something, particularly among newbies who arrive on the scene after the spin-off has occurred (avoids the old-guard syndrome of those who can't abide any changes in their revered pastime, whatever it may be).

Soccer, rugby, football (insert the modifier American if you feel you must), all evolved from earlier games involving kicked balls and goal lines, and if you go back a few thousand years there were probably a couple twits with sore toes kicking around a coconut.  There are still people playing all three games, and, in the U.S. at least, there are some individuals who watch/participate in all three.

Eebster

There are already lots of spin-offs of chess. I mean, Fischer Random is pretty popular, as are about a billion varieties of fairy chess, several kinds of 3D chess, 9x9 and 10x10 chess, three- and four-player chess, etc. Generally the less similar to traditional chess they are, the less commonly they are played.

bgangioni

Yep, I don't think dice chess would be very popular. Wait! It already exists, and it isn't popular at all.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dice_chess

For people who like chess, it takes away all the fun. Just imagine, being able to see the best move for a position, and not being allowed to play it! Daghjjsh...

And I guess people who don't like chess, just won't like any of its versions either, that including the dice version.

Sounds very similar to Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen versus The World.
