USCF 1514 seemed reasonably good to me when I reached it for the first time. Now, I struggle to take such players seriously.

That is where you are wrong, Valen562, my friend....1400 is well above the average, which is always around the 1000-1020 range. If 1400 is almost 400 points more then the average, how is this NOT a good rating???
it's also quite easy for a 2000+ player to declare that "14xx sucks!"
there is the assumption that the 1400 player could be much better but they must be dumb somehow. i mean, really, who can possibly enjoy chess at such a low level?!?
except, some 1400 players don't care about rating. some better players here need to understand that.
