Hello, I would like to say right away that I am not very professional in chess as a player of a high level, but I can understand your concern, you look at the rest of the players with a fairly high level of play and rating and think that you are not good enough for them. But I don't think you have cause for concern. If there's a universal level of appreciation for people's play, it's 1000lvl, if you go beyond it, then it's not so bad, so it seems to me that you will achieve great success, which I wish you! :blush
Is 1400 good for a 14 year old?
Seems reasonable, but you should know now whether you've got talent for the game or not. Do you have a trainer?
No but I am planning on getting a in person coach this summer who is an FM.
I think this is a bad place to get input on that. This place is full of chess nerds. 1400 is mind bogglingly better than almost every other chess player, regardless of age.
If you are that good at 14, then I imagine if you kept going at your current pace, then you could end up obliterating most people here in the comments section within a few years ![]()
Casual players are good at 1000. Most people are 400 players when they "know how to play".
What a load of nonsense. 400 rated players don't know how to play. They literally blunder pieces every other move. I think that casual over the board at 1800 are good.
I started playing chess when I was five and began playing online when I was around eleven or twelve. I plateaued at a rating of 900-1000, then quit for a year and a half. I then seriously got back into chess around January and have since climbed up around 550 rating points. I want to know if a rating of 1400 is good for my age. I regularly play at a 1500 level, but my rating is lower than 1500 because I only play one or two games a day and spend the rest of the day studying. I just recently started playing USCF tournaments as well and I have taken a huge liking to the game. I hope to become a National Master one day as I believe with enough hard work I can pull it off, as Sam Copeland, a National Master who works for Chess.com, got his title at 26 and was only a 1700 at 16 years old.
Not that good, but decent
