Why so much hate against checkers? Yes chess is clearly a better game than the 8x8 checkers which is played in the UK and the US, but the 10x10 variant appears to be just as rich as chess, but much less chaotic. I'd be interested in the opinions of players who have mastered both games and who can give their insights, while people who are amateurs at both games tend to be biased toward chess because it's "tactical".

HBohun

Yeah, checkers (even the 8x8 version) is much more complicated than most people think.

AussieMatey

Chess then Checkers, not Checkers then chess, cos then you'll know then that then their chess is better then then their checkers. OK, then, that's it then.

Both games are fun, but I like chess better because there is much more exploration. Checkers is a solved game, while the number of chess positions still remains unsolved-there is even no evidence that shows which side is better!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Конечно шашки лучше!

UglukCanPlayChess

Checkers is for people who cannot play chess. There is exponentially less complexity when all the pieces make he same move, and it takes a good 10 moves for that to slightly change.

Tiansonguo

nope

There is exponentially less game theoretical complexity, and therefore the game is easy enough that you can become a grandmaster in a week right? happy.png (yes checkers titles do exist). This is the same fallacy used by people arguing Go and Shogi are better than chess.

Only a very specific variant of checkers is solved (Go As You Please 8x8 checkers). Checkers with 3 move openings is not solved, and 10x10 checkers is nowhere near being solved.

Also a lot of the discussion about game theoretic complexity is irrelevant as in every position there is a limited number of candidate moves. While I wouldn't rule it out, I'd like to see evidence that in an average chess position there is a larger number of reasonable candidate moves than an average checkers position, given that most pawn structures have pretty well-defined plans, while tactical positions may have long strings of forced moves. (I'm focusing on 10x10 checkers here).
