Is the higher your rating, higher your iq?

Avatar of BlargDragon

It's true. The average IQ is 100 and the average FIDE rating is 1200, so you can quickly calculate your IQ by dividing your rating by 12. Magnus Carlsen's rating of 2851 is indicative of an IQ of 238, rounded up. IQ changes dynamically with rating, so a string of losses can seriously hamper your intelligence. Losing streaks will negatively affect one's temperament as a result, making one more irritable because stupid people are mean.

So my rating should be 1656

Interestingly, chess rating may be inversely proportional to optimism.

So the smartest person in the world can be good at chess easily?

Well not necessarily. I think skill comes with focused practice over many years. A person with a high IQ level may not be skilled in chess but rather in another sport (yes, chess is a sport) or a game with strategy. But this could be applied to some people. Maybe you agree, maybe you disagree, I don't know. Enjoy your day!✌🏼️
