So what is it? You say what? Practice... Yeah practice losing. I'm good at that. losing. Its a pastime of mine. I lose and then I pull my hair out. I lose and now I'm bald too! Thank you! Thank you! So is it practicing?....

How sad!

Well, man, what can is say. It's practice of course, but you probably have biggest issue with acceptance of your losses. I felt like it, others I know felt like it. All grandmasters feel it. Pretty much all chess players feel bad when they lose. But wise players learn to accept it as part of chess.

I don't know how experienced you are and whether you are new at chess, but I think there is such a thing as "new player reality check". There is probably a better term for it. But it is when people start playing chess and they're very excited at first because it is a new and exciting thing for them. This excitement probably makes some new players have strong desire to be very good at chess. They read a book and play some tactics and think they'll just quickly understand some concept and reach 2000, as if it was a matter of their desire only. Then they play against some stronger players or against computer and get absolutely destroyed. Then the shock sets in that they aren't actually very good and they realize that it's not about how strongly they want to win but about studying and experience. Maybe some feel just frustrated, some think they might actually be stupid, others feel anger. Who knows?

People who are serious about playing chess, whether competitively or casually quickly overcome this beginner disappointment and start enjoying chess not just when they win but for entirety of it, with wins and losses. They enjoy the means, not the end results.

I looked at your home page. In blitz you have won 49% of the time and lost 47% of the time. You roughly play people of a close rating to you. You are at 92.2%, this means 92.1% of the players here have a lowwer rating than you.Your only problem is you are only comparing yourself to stronger players here.No matter how good you are at chess there are always going to be better players you just have to look at the bigger picture.

Capablanca said that chess players will need to lose many many games before winning. And it is also well known that defeats are the best way to learn. If you don't want to lose then don't play chess, easy as that. I thought only kids had difficulties when accepting loses.

"Want to state to my peers; I hate chess as a game, as a pastime; I forever will and always HATE chess."   Nekehemevich. March 2, 2106.

one thing I've never understood, and still find very confusing is why would, someone who hates chess PLAYS it.  I mean I understand feeling

like a chess game made you feel like a complete idiot

like a chess game reduces any pride you might have in your own intellect, and there's nothing worse than having someone show that a "brilliant" game was in fact- easily refuted, and I think everybody also knows the feeling of dissapointment after a poor tournament, and embarassment when a stronger player shows you easy moves that could have turned a loss around...

all these difficult emotions and more are common in chess- and you can't deny that the game is more emotionally trying than most.

but why would you play if you fundamentally hated the game,  why play if you found no joy in its deep logic-- a game simple enough that you can teach it to an ADD afflicted 8 year old, but strong enough that the most brilliant and talented person can pour their WHOLE life into studying it- and still fail to master it.

a game, where in they are more possible game plays that atoms in the universe.

a game of incredible, mental challenge where victory can only be achieved by total mental concentration and exhaustible patience and carefulness.

"the harder something is, the more joy in accomplishing it."

this beyond many other things is what motivates me to play and study chess.  if you don't feel the same way- why would play the game and how the heck cares whether you ended with a blitz of 1497 or 497?

spare yourself the anguish and pick up a hobby you enjoy.

I also like fishing. its very relaxing.  its mildly demanding if you want to catch a lot of fish, but as long as your not into the tournament scene- you can always go with bug spray, sun screen  and just enjoy the river (lake, stream)...

oh and if your in St george there is rock climbing, astronomy, mountain biking.... feel free to look up other hobbies- there is a lot of them.

What wrong with you lol?  You have a respectable blitz rating (the pool you almost exclusively play) with a percentile of 90.

You win loss ratio are about the same so why are you only complaining about your losses when you have wins to celebrate and match?

You had a big slump this month but then shot right back up to 1600 then you only went down 100 points and you are bald with anger?

Relax you pesimistic ass.  Your ratings have never been consistently higher in the last few months so what are you fussing about now?

Go bitch somewhere else.

I didn't even check.  as I point out he's had bouts of chess depression since at least march.

I don't think I understand.

I think either he's trolling us, or he needs to resolve these feelings.

if he trully hates chess- he should walk away.  we have quite a few people do this.  you just say "good bye cruel world" and then a few hours/day later their account is closed.

if on the other hand, he really needs to play chess- he should quite "hating" it.  nothing says you have to 'like' losing.  but "like" the game; and learn to enjoy its capacity to humiliate and elevate someone's thinking.

on the other hand, post after post about how awful a 1600 blitz player is sure to get old.  there's plenty of us that are No-where near that rating.   No rating is "good" enough. if you have 1200 you want 1400, and on and on.

no doubt carlsen REALLY wants 2900 too.

I'm officially declining the queen's gambit.

Agree with ChessOfPlayer, so the OP dipped below 1500 blitz, big freaking whoop. Last night between losing multiple games by disconnection and playing like garbage I fell below 1500 too. Do you see me having a meltdown about it? Get a grip dude.

Of all the words one could use to describe a supposedly bad player...

"disgusting"? Really?

Desire to win and self-belief drives people to excel by hardwork(training & studying) & perseverance(experience).

Patzer….did you really mean 2106 March2  ?  "Doctor Who" theme playing .

thegreat_patzer

@Ash

apparently people have different reactions to being out-witted by another.

like you Most of the time, I think to myself, "I really need to learn how to play better &  What skills did I lack during this game"- rather than "I am disgusting"

pestebalcanica

Yes, unfortunately he's not been playing ever since.

Yes.  What I said there was completely and utterly 'ignorant'...

Glad to know you agree with my ignorant nonsense!  If only we were all like Donald the wise though...
