Maybe an unpopular opinion, but people shouldn’t resign just because they’re down in material

I feel like even if you’re losing badly, still play it out and learn how to play from the bottom. It’ll still improve your game. Who knows? Your opponent can still blunder and you can capitalize on that.

A guy quit mid game against me before because I forked his queen and his king with my knight, winning me his queen. Other than the fact that I was up a queen on him, we had a pretty even game going. I still could have messed up. It’s always so disappointing when people resign like that during the mid game just because they blundered a piece.

Thoughts?

There are probably a dozen threads already on this topic. There are a few different groups.

1. Those who think it’s rude and disrespectful not to resign in a lost position. You are wasting their time.

2. Those who think you should fight to the bitter end.

3. Those who think that learning to defend a lost position is a good learning experience.

4. Those who get upset because you rob them of the pleasure of mating you.

4a. Those who are upset that they never get practice with their mating endgame.

5. Those who think the rules are such that it’s your choice and you can do whatever you want.

I think that’s all of them. I could be wrong.

You’re assuming that winning is the ultimate goal. I don’t. If the only way I can win is by my opponent blundering, that doesn’t prove anything about me, it says more about my opponent. I don’t feel good about winning only because my opponent screwed up. To me I still sucked. Others disagree and that’s fine.

Depending on your rating/skill level this is either a good idea or a waste of time. Usually at lower levels it's better to play on, create counterplay.

To be fair, at some point if I'm tilting very badly, I will resign if I literally lose a piece. It doesn't happen often but yeah... It happens

LeonMh

if one lose a piece and the spark got knocked out, then resign. it's honorable and polite to do so at times. sometimes it's corny when quality play is still to be had. but the idea of saying when someone should or shouldn't do it is a little arrogant imo. take the win and move on. If it's anything more than that it may be some other issues manifesting.

disrespectfully not resigning here

It depends on a lot of factors: the position, your mood, the opponents mood, the importance of the game, etc. Just do what you want and think your should do. Me, personally, like to fight to the end (mostly because a very higher rated opponent stalemated me with a queen, knight, rook, and pawn in an OTB a few months ago), but sometimes I just want to go and take a nap. So... yeah.

For me, a rook down,  opponent 30 seconds remaining,  and no good counter are enough to resign.

They may have like 5% chances of messing up.

But in new game , they have 50% chance of messing up. ( exclude  draw)

Why not the new start new one early, and farm back the lost rating points? At the end of the day,  messing up 1-2 games is nothing, a consistently good performance of 20-30 games is important.

I would definitely resign when down a single piece to someone around my blitz, 2200. As long as my opponent has enough time on their clock

StormCentre3

Some players count into days/weeks the lost time pursuing that once in a lifetime stalemate when completely lost that saved them 5 rating points.

Your opponent can blunder in the game you cannot resign you still have to play at the end of the game.

CAN. He probably will not have blundered and you just wasted both your time. Imagine all the extra stuff you could do with that time. Saying that you are forced to play to the end and are not allowed to resign is psychotic. Go see a doctor, you clearly need to get your brain checked.

Don't be rude and everyone makes mistakes

From my perspective it's rude to say that I must play until mate. And yes, but if you are up a queen almost no mistake will save you

It's not rude to play until mate and I already said everyone makes mistakes.

everyone makes mistakes, yes.

But not all mistakes are equal, and not all mistakes happen with the same frequency.

Snudo is 100% correct. The computer will show a blunder if you don’t see a mate in 3 combination or you hang a queen. The computer only cares about the size of the eval swing but clearly one is more excusable than the other.
