Haven't played Magic for years. Does it still have a following ? Can it be played online in any way ?

I always find it amusing when a new girlfriend says I must teach her how to play chess. As though a chess playing girlfriend is a BIG priority and makes her more desirable one way or the other ! :-)

I've always thought having a chess boyfriend would be hot.  And would make a guy more desirable.  But when I see most of the guys who play chess...I realize there might be too much to give up in the looks department.  No offense, of course.

{EDITED} but I really like chess.  I have a really nice maplewood chess board and the pieces are really smooth and have all the right ridges.

Is there a name for that for that variation, I want to look it up in my FIDE encyclopaedia of chess openings?

No name for it yet, it hasn't been anal-yzed thoroughly enough yet.

 Good one.  ;)

chess or Magic:  The Gathering?

Chess (best game ever) or  Magic: The Gathering (a card game) really fun but unforgiving to new players (kind of like chess in that regard)

Yes Magic can be played online,  but  like chess I think it is more fun in person.  There is still a following for it.  But I think World of Warcraft took a major chunk out of it's fanbase.

There is a hubby and wife couple here that come to club together in Alabama.  I hate them (envy) because they are so happy together lol.  I think Chess has come in between every relationship I've had  lol.

If you can get a wife who loves chess... you are da man.

Eleanor and Curtis... both are pretty strong B players.

I discussed this a little here:

There is a guy in DC who had a wife who got [edited]  upset and glued his chess pieces to the board...  When he found it... he didn't get made...he was just annoyed that the Queen wasn't on her color!  LOL!

[this is a family friendly site. please remember that and use appropriate language. thanks.]

My wife is actually more of a chess fanatic than I am ! This is amazing to me. She is often the one pushing me to go to otb events ! We go to tournaments together always and plan on playing in Benasque this July. Another passion we share is cats ! I have really lucked out.......

No, she's not a titled player but her best fide rating is about 1950. However, since she has taken up chess politics she has lost about 200 rating points !  I told her to stay away from the politics.... Frown

Yes... beat me in chess and in the ring lol

It is very difficult to find a woman who is willing to play chess and give it a chance. my wife will play me cards or scrabble or chinese checkers or  mancala or almost any other kind of game but for my birthday last June she bought me a chess set and said that my birthday present was that she would play 10 games with me, we played one game and then she has refused to give me any of the other 9 that she promised me. It is so freak'n unfair, all i want is to share a passion with her but she refuses to give any passion to chess no matter how much passion i give her for scrabble or cards or whatever. I don't understand it, my sister is the same way towards chess, and so is my mom, though they are all great at any other game but they all have an arrogant snobiness that puts them way above chess??? but interestingly enough it is amazing how many friends of mine that are guys, though willing to play sometimes, still don't care much about it. I just don't understand how they are not in to it, i can give them all the same enjoyment for pool or fuseball, or axis & allies, or connect four, or whatever and i can sincerely enjoy it with them but they just cannot offer the same courtesy for chess. it is one of the worlds unsolved mysteries.

so i have decided to just brag about the Polgar Sisters every day, and download videos of them from the internet every day and to keep on rubbing it in my wifes face until she gets it through her head that it is her destiny to share it with me and that it is just as much a woman's ability as a man's ability. since i have been doing that my wife has been slowly but surely softening up to it. and one day she will get hooked too! then we will be able to share it together!

pastoryoshi!  that's excellent!

Women and chess usually do not mix, I think that they prefer a marguarita.

There are exceptions and if you are lucky, she might like it.

Men are the same, we do not like shopping for cosmetics, but if the demo application is outstanding, we love the outcome.
