My first tournament

Hi all

I have recently got back into chess. I only really get to play online these days (May get the odd game OTB with the kids but I have only just started to teach them) I thought it might be a nice idea to try an OTB tournament maybe around September time. I live in the UK and I was wondering if anyone answers a couple of questions.

How to find and pick the correct event.
Do you need to be a member of a federation?
What to expect on the day.
How to prepare for the event.

Thanks for all the help in advance. I am considering writing a series of blog posts documenting my journey.

Let me know what you think.

You didn't say where you live. Your profile says UK. Presumably there are more tournaments in and near major cities. Some places have few tournaments. Finding a local club is a good way to get into it.

Just go. Don't sweat about prep. Bring a set, board and clock.

Yes that may help

I live about 50 miles north of London.

Unfortunately, due to my schedule (When I say mine I do mean my kids!!!), I can not attend my local club.
