Happened to me just today - both of us had both our rooks and he was a bit ahead in pawns but no other pieces. He was ahead and he was pairing his rooks well, but he suddenly resigned.
If he'd done ONE slip-up and left my rook alone for ONE move, it'd have been checkmate:
Gg, my opponent was winning, he was getting a new queen, but suddenly I played rc1,and my opponent resigned! He missed to play bd1! Guys if you whant you can write in comments your games where your opponent was winning but he resigned.
