A lot of people say forget the openings until later. Like 1800+ later. I think that although I play cluelessly at least an opening gives me an environment to bumble about in. At least it does when playing the computer where I can say computer play this or computer play that. Ah but people are treachorous and less compliant! I love your enthusiasm though and think that if you like an opening you will work at it and get good.
The Vienna definitely makes me pause and think oh boy what am I in for. Kind of demoralizes me because I don't know it. Sicilians are awesome but which one? I'm exploring the Najdorf but should really be working on endgames at my rating. I've always loved the King's Indian. More exciting than the Slav but constrictive for black. But man it's tight. Those that don't know how to pick it apart are really put off by it.
The Gruenfeld has a lot of theory and is topical these days (any references? refutations? anybody?). Topical, but hey that King's Indian is good enough with say the Nimzo-Indian which is sound or the boring Slav which is also sound. I would save the Kings Indian for weaker players.
People hate the French because it's a tough nut to crack for white. I would stick with that one. The Scandanavian upsets me because I don't know it and I get mad when somebody brings there queen out so early and then beats me. Oh, and your Scotch is something I want to learn in lieu of the Spanish. The Spanish is aesthetic though. The Chigorin is the prettiest opening I've seen. The Berlin is current.
How about a flank attack with the English like the other poster mentioned? It would ruin my day to have to play against it. You could be like, "Say hello to my little friend...c4." And why not consider the Spanish? It's a very grownup opening that a lot of people really fear. Avoiding the Spanish fueles the fires of Sicilian theory.
Hello, I am trying to complete a repertoire ofr black and white for myself. I don't know how describe my playstyle other than agressive and when i took the "what type of chess player am i quiz". I ended up with magician. My openings as white are the scotch game, vienna game and gambit, and other variations and gambits of the scotch and vienna game, but I do not know what they are called. As black, i play sicilians, the king's indian defense, the french defense, the grunfeld and the scandinavian. I think my repertoire for black is complete, but I would like some recommendations especially for my white repertoire.
