Obviously, this is a blitz game with many errors. My opponent won on time... when I got down to a knight each, I figured I was safe, but the clock kept running! Is it because, say, I had my king on a1 and my knight on b1 and his king was on b3, if he moved his knight to c2 I'd be mated? I tried offering draws but he wouldn't take them, even though this was our second blitz and we had friendly conversation between games :/

To be honest, if I was on the other side, I might have let the other guy lose to gain a few rating points, but I have decided I'll try not to be like that from now on.

A game where both sides have a king and knight is a draw game. There is no way for either side to get a checkmate (you can try playing it out yourself, but trust me, there is no checkmate with a single knight; there isn't even one for a king and two knights). So this game should have been a draw already, but because there was a time factor, someone had to lose. I'm sure the reason your opponent didn't accept that draw was probably because you were low on time.

In a non-timed game, this would automatically be considered a draw, but because there was a time factor involved, someone had to lose. Hope this helped.

there is a way that he could checkmate me if my king was in the corner and my knight was blocking the kings escape square, but that would be really foolish of me to get in that situation.

I don't see why chess.com couldn't put an auto-draw in this situation. So, if somehow the situation got to this in a 30 minute game, with 5 minutes left each (lets just say), then the two people would have to keep moving their pieces until time is up for one of them, unless someone accepts a draw or 50 moves occur? silly.

In a time-out situation, weakest play is assumed for the losing player (help-mate).

Had you given your knight away the game would have been drawn instantly by way of "insufficient material".

yeah, thats what i meant prawn

so its virtually a drawn game, but not technically drawn

while i'm at it, how do i get diagrams up? it would have saved some typing

In the "post your reply" box (bottom of page), there is a little chess board (top, left).. click it!

Also (because they're tricky to start with):

That's the thing.  Officially, such a situation is not an automatic draw.  Yes, in most games, the two players will amicably agree to a draw, but trying to run your opponent's time down is allowed.  Now, in an OTB game, the arbiter or TD will likely rule the game a draw, provided you can prove to him you know the appropriate drawing technique (in your case, you can simply say "stay near the center or try to capture/lose a knight").  In harder situations, an arbiter may change the clock to a delay/increment and force one/both players to prove their point on the board.  The problem here is that there is no human arbiter to watch the game, and thus no human judgement can be made.  A computer is more likely to know the appropriate techniques, but won't be able to judge if the players know them.  The consensus, then, is to only enforce automatic draws if there is no possible way, no matter how ridiculous the moves neccessary, for a mate to occur.

When I play in "rapid-play" tournaments the Directors usually place a notice to the effect of "Draws will be awarded (at the TD's discretion) in situations where a player is trying to win by unusual means". The situation outlined in post #1 would definitely qualify but as omnipaul says, there's no online arbiter for LiveChess.

Had you played 51. Nxf6 there wouldn't have been a situation. Also premoves are fun. This isn't OTB so you just have to get used to the type of environment that online chess is. If you don't like that, only play games with 5sec increment or something to that effect.

Sorry if I was a little unclear bondiggity but I was actually playing as black... if only white had taken my knight! lol

Premoves?

When I posted this regarding the king and knight, I meant to say that there was no forced mate. The opponent can play carelessly, and therefore get checkmated, but I meant no actual forced mate.
