Online ratings literally mean absolutely nothing compared to 1000 rated USCF players

I mean, everyone is always saying that online ratings mean nothing. It's so true. Clearly, any 1000 USCF player could wipe the floor with someone who is rated 2300 in blitz on this site. It's really no comparison. I feel so bad for all the players who have spent thousands of hours playing chess on this site who actually think they have been playing the sport of chess at all: they couldn't even beat someone who has done even one OTB tournament in their life. Pathetic. I remember one time when I was playing a complete beginner over the board. He just learned how the pieces had moved the prior day at an OTB Tournament and still actually slaughtered me despite the fact that I've spent years studying with a master and practiced for endless hours. These online ratings really do mean nothing.

People cheat online. All the time.

Then that makes higher online ratings even more valuable if you can beat the guy who pops Stockfish on every 5 or 6 moves to avoid detection, right? happy.png

No I'm just referring to when people only use it for occassional moves - then you can still beat them. If people use it every move then of course one cannot beat them, but they often get detected. But if people only use it here and there - every 5 or 6 moves - then they still might make plenty of mistakes, especially if they have trained their brain to rely on engines.

There is one more potential discrepancy between online and over the board. For a year there were no OTB tournaments. Even now it is probably not the same as before 2020. So there are some people with for instance 2200 online rating but still with like 1 100 FIDE or UCSF because they played their last tournament a year and a half ago or 2 years ago even. happy.png

Yes, that's a great point.

Exactly I always tell people I'm just an intermediate player, online ratings means nothing, but they don't believe me somehow.

but its true.. online rating almost means nothing compared to real FIDE rating.. so its extremely stupid to suspect a 1200 rated player of playing dirty just because he has had 90-99 accuracies for 8 out of 10 games in blitz and bullet

I'd say that online ratings (here) are generally about 200 to 300 points inflated, compared to FIDE ratings.

haha. Though I will say I am a data point for the highly inflated online ratings. Still in single digits USCF but have 1600 rating here

They do indicate strength, and a 2000 on chess.com is definitely better than a 1200 fide, but a fide rating is still "worth" more. You won't get anything by reaching 2300 online, but OTB you will recieve the FM title. I would say that you couldn't call yourself a chess player, if you don't have a OTB rating. You play chess as a hobby, but you wouldn't be a chess player.

A person who gets slaughtered by a beginner who learned how the pieces move yesterday despite the fact he spent many years practicing and studying with the master has no right to say anything about online ratings. :)
