re 1: i dont see any connection with Hofstadter... At least, there are two connections with Hofstadter [though it is not part of some Escher work] - Art, and self-reference ;) [hint to answer to 1st question!]

chess is a game. chess is a sport. chess is an art. chess is a mindgame. chess is a wargame. It can't simply be confined to one dimension only and that's what i like about chess. Those involved in sports are athletes and to develop their athletic abilities they train (physically) hard for them to sustain the pressure of the competition. Unfortunately cheater_1 will not accept the physicality of the brain's training. In my opinion the brain exerts so much effort analysing chess positions. It becomes even more exhausting if the game lasts for about 5 hours. When you look at Kobe Bryant you know that at sight that man is an athlete. The only problem I have with cheater_1 is if he points out that Viktor Korchnoi, compared to Kobe Bryant, doesn't look like an athlete at all thereby making chess merely a game and not a sporting athletic activity.
