Some useful things are taught in school: reading, writing, arithmetic, computers.

The rest is just training children to grow up to be slaves: the rich need to maintain an underclass of peons to do all the low-paid jobs.

School doesn't teach you about life; it is only a factory for the labor force and creating new babies.

It was a good system for the last few centuries; but is a bit outdated now.

Thomas9400--

I used to think the same things you do, honest. I get where you're coming from and school isn't always the most enjoyable thing in the world. Please remember, I'm not so far out of it; I'm only 19 and I'm enrolled in college, and I assume you're in middle school. I still understand what it's like sometimes.

Sometimes, you need to take a step back to appreciate the fact that you are extremely lucky to be where you are. You get an education, (a good one in fact!) and everything is laid out for you to succeed if you apply yourself. You will never be a website designer/computer programmer if you don't apply yourself in school.

Regarding teachers saying you were lazy and distracted in school-- remember that they do have a job, and that job is to teach you. They care that you learn the material and they want you to succeed in their class. Additionally, your performance reflects back on them as teachers.

I agree with Kitley 197, Thomas, try to be more positive. It is true not all that you learn in school will be useful. And, it is also true that not all your teachers will be excellent. Unfortunately. But, you will find some that are cool and that are honestly trying to help you improve your life. Instead of only criticizing, get involved: why not try to implement a chess program at your school? Just like life, school will be what you make it. There are imbeciles, morons and bullies but there are also good people: find them and make friends. The way you learn to socialize and adapt to new situations will help you later on in life. Yes, you could stay home and learn by yourself but you will be lonely and you will not improve your social skills... The more you participate in what you like, the more you will like school. Be nice and kind to people and some of them will be nice to you. Finally, your negativism and cynicism may come across as a superiority complex, be careful. Anyway, you may tell me to mind my oen bussiness, but this advice is coming from the heart. Good luck in all your endeavors!

They should teach chess at all schools.

I totally agree. Chess teaches something that schools can't.

Yeah, the en passant rule for starters.

Chess can teach concentration. Most kids at school have this fake disease called ADD or ADHD which is just an excuse to give kids perscription meth. Instead, they should play a few games of chess.

Yes, evry school should have a chess club, tournaments (in school, school board wide, regionally, etc.), chess coaches, invited professional chess teachers, chess camps... Every classroom should have accessible chess games and clocks. Students should be encouraged to play whenever there is free time or if they finish their work ahead of time. This is the school that I have created! How did this transform the school? Provincial achievement standards went up, our students win tournaments constantly, they are happy and proud... We start teaching chess at junior kindergarden and they play until grade 12. I have many ideas on how to start...

I guess we would all be biased, being on a chess website and that...

I'm appalled by the amount of arrogance in this thread. You are not a special snowflake, and other students are not "sheep". Learning how to deal with other people is probably the most useful skill of all. Being a Negative Nancy won't help you in the slightest. Even if your abilities far outstrip those of your peers (which I sincerely doubt they do), condescension and lack of cooperation will only create more problems for you down the line.

I'm sure we all hated going back to school once, but Thomas, stay in the group we set up; we will run it while you're away but when you have time it will be yours.

I'm appalled by the amount of arrogance in this thread. Uh-oh. What did I do? You are not a special snowflake, and other students are not "sheep". Well, yes, they are. They are often rude people. Just because you are one of them doesn't make it okay... Learning how to deal with other people is probably the most useful skill of all. Learning manners needs to be instigated in schools, so that we can all treat each other fairly... Being a Negative Nancy won't help you in the slightest. Okay, so he's a snowflake AND a "Negative Nancy", is he? Even if your abilities far outstrip those of your peers (which I sincerely doubt they do), condescension and lack of cooperation will only create more problems for you down the line. He mentions nothing about being condescending to their face...

Playing chess in person with lower level players can have problems. Lower level players might not be able to see check or discovered check. They should play on computer to make sure this doesn't happen. But then again, they should also play in person too so they can get used to spotting this.

I never said i go around telling the oafs that they are oafs i would probably get a response like "yea but im good at football bro". also i do not think i am anything special just another  human. also negative in the line of work i intend to go through wont affect me once so ever.

I literly had a girl in my science class today ask in these exact words "So like you knoiw how in the movies there is stars and stuff...well like are those acually there" No i am not making that up that was acually what she asked

Avatar of Unicyclist

Arrogance is arrogance, regardless of whether or not you degrade them to their faces.

You may say you don't think you're anything special, yet you continually refer to your peers as morons and oafs. Why is that necessary? You don't need to like your peers, you don't need to agree with their interests or hobbies, but you DO have to respect them. There are countless examples in this thread where you are not respecting them.
