speed of a game

Since I joined this site I've received, at least, six complaints from opponents that I'm moving too slowly.  What am I missing here?  If I take part in a "three day" game, why the impatience if I haven't made a move in 24 hours?  Let's have some patience please.  Consider the length of game you are agreeing to.  I even had a "one day" game where an opponent complained that I hadn't moved in an hour.

Too right. Some new users seem confused when you don't move immediately, expecting a live game, and I've had people message me with 'are you there??'. I've also seen forum posts from people in that situation, and I wonder if they're missing something obvious, or if something more obvious could be devised to explain how things work...

But it doesn't sound like that's the case here... If you want speed, go play table-tennis! Laughing

Yes, many people seemed confused between the slower chess where it is 1+ day per move and live chess. I am sure once the "live chess" feature comes out the confusion will be settled.

But please do not feel rushed by the opponent, you are allowed to use all of your allotted time if you need it.

That's true. My opponent who is also my countryman and seems to be first time user messaged me in our dialect that I'm moving too slow and that if there's a way, he will be the one to make a move for my turn. It's irritating.Frown I threaten to win a piece on the 12th move of our game, he logout. He lost on time!Laughing

Apparently some people are used to the on-line blitz chess, and do not take the time to understand that chess.com offers a more relaxed game. I would kindly remind them that this is "Turn Chess" with a minimum of 24 hours to respond.

The first person to challenge me when I first joined had the attitude: "Hurry up!"

I asked him if he tailgates the car in front of him when he drives and gets angry that the driver is not going fast enough for him. With an "lol" he admitted that it is true. When this happens I let people know that I am not on this site to increase the number of deadlines in my life, and that I will take whatever time I need. Best thing is to let them be upset if they want to, but not to accept stress for yourself.

Challenge me any time, and add me as a friend. Whoever wins the game, we can enjoy it.

A few days ago I had a guy tell me to hurry up. Two moves later he was in a King-Rook fork wondering what had happened.  "Speed kills", I replied. Another guy resigned because I hadn't moved in 2 minutes in a 3 day per move game. Maybe they should return to Playstation and leave chess to mature minds.

Lets just all be patient with our opponents! I mean, this online turn chess is somewhat like correspondence chess, lets analyse our games carefully and gain something out of it rather than play quick uneventful games which doesnt help us improve at all!

some people say this is the 'now' generation, everyone has to have thing straight away, e.g taking photos. it used to take a day in order to process picture but now we can do thing instantly we don't even need to wait till we get home to make a phone call or something like that. i think we do need to be patient. what happened to patience is a virtue?

Yea, happened to me last night. Guy offers a 5 day game and a couple of moves into he writes in caps " LETS HURRY THIS GAME UP....I GOTTA GO". (He was on-line for 4 more hours)

I asked why a 5 day challenge if he is in such a hurry. No response. The game is tight now so I'm taking my time and letting him sweat (:

I must go the offensive here, I can understand studing the board and maybe the weekends but for no reason should it really take 3 days to make a move.  I know there's the option the set the timer up but I don't remember to set it and most of my challenges (in coming and out going) are set on default 3 days.  I'm not complaining and haven't tries to rush anyone but dang it takes for ever...then you have some who know they're beaten and don't finish, I know you win on time but likes to win that way.  All but two of my matches going on right now are three days old and I guess I'm not a patient man.  I'm over it now.

There are plenty of positions you can analyze for days. There are positions in grandmaster games people have been analyzing for literally a hundred years, and they're still finding new resources. A beautifully played chess game is a work of art where the unsaid is as powerful as the said.

There is also nothing wrong with the naked aggression and knife-fight aesthetics of five minute blitz. One is a marthon and the other is a sprint. They are both equally a part of the richness of chess.

A time control should be taken at face value. If you have three days, you have three days. You are playing postal chess at that point. There are many, many sites that offer live blitz. I hope this one will too, soon.

I should add that for most beginning to intermediate players trying to improve, the single most important piece of advice is concentrate. Analyze the complications. In other words, take your time. If you're moving fast and tapping your feet until you can bang out another move, it's good odds you aren't improving.

I hate blitz. One thing I am eagerly waiting for, is to be able to sit down peacefully a Saturday afternoon with someone who agrees, and play a 4 or 5 hours chess game. I can't wait to do that!

"If you have three days, you have three days."

Exactly. It's all pretty cut and dry. You either set the terms or you agreed to the terms. If you don't pay attention to them, then that's your own fault and there's nothing to complain about.

chess is a slow game even when your playing it live. It requires concentration and sometimes moving slowly can be a good strategy leaving your oponent to lose concentration. There is nothing more satisfying in chess than to win a game against a person whos been nagging you to move the entire game. Chess is a game of concentration and if you want a fast game set the timer to a fast game, otherwise dont complain. The person on the other end is probably stalling for a reason.

Yeah yeah you are right about the art of war and all that stuff but, I'd like to play 10 minute x 2 as well every once in a while, this is my only complaint and believe me it's not bothering me to the point where I write something to my opponent about his time but I'm tired of playing one person for a week.  That's all I'm saying.

May I assume that you don't have a job, or go to school?

No reason it should take 3 days to make a move? Well, let's see - I made my last move a 11:30pm and my opponent was already offline. So I go to bed, get up for work the next day, spend 2 hours in crappy traffic driving to the office only to find out that there was a major problem with last night's release. I run around for 13 hours trying to fix it, then face another 2 hour drive home. I'm home late, the kids are in bed, and dinner is cold. I eat what I can while checking my email (to make sure nothing blew up tonight), then fall asleep watching the news.

Next morning I deal with the same crappy commute, but everything went smoothly at work. I have meetings all morning, so I figure I'll check in and make my move at lunch. But in the middle of my last meeting, I get a call from the school and have to head back to take care of my kid's latest screw-up. By the time everything is dealt with and we're all back home, I have a headache and can't focus on the board well enough to tell a pawn from a bishop. Ah, well, I still have one more day.

Next day - busy day at work, but otherwise normal. I get home and finally have a chance to take a look at the board and make my move before dinner.

Now, I have spent maybe 10 minutes actually considering my move, but it took me three days to make it. But this sort of thing is WHY I picked a 3-day game in the first place. If you don't like it, then don't play 3-day games!

In the day of the Internet it makes sense to have 3 days per move games.  I have about 5 games going at any point of time and its "My Move" in just one or two games usually whenever I check the site.  I like it that way.  I also enjoy OTB chess but there's less time for that these days.  The best response to impatient people is to ignore them.  Enjoy the game.

I'm curious, ive never played with a clock as they do in the professional game. Whats the deal with that, do they have a time limit, how long is it?
excalibur8
Some of us have more time on our hands than others; just play within the times mutually agreed and there shouldn't be a problem.
