Sportsmanship in chess

I grew up playing ball sports, not chess.

One thing that was ingrained into me from the beginning in every sport I played (basketball, cricket, football, tennis, volleyball) was that after every game you shook hand and told your opponent "Good game" or "Well played."

I still do that in chess. After every game I say "Good game." Yet only a single opponent has done the same.I don't do anything bad in games. I don't sledge, I don't waste time or abandon games.

Side note: I have had players request a chat and sledge me (e.g. asking me if I'm an idiot).

So it has me wondering... Is this not a thing in chess?

I suspect that it would be, otherwise why is there a "Good game" option to click after you answer "Yes" to "Was your opponent a good sport?"

How many of you actually say "Good game" to your opponent after a match?

I turn the chat off.
