So here is how things go.My opponent makes a move and by order 1,2,3,4,...tell what to think about before making my move?

Crazychessplaya

1. Did they hang a piece ?

2. What is threatened ?

3. What changed weakness-wise ?

4. How does this change my plan ?

JamieKowalski

Number one should always be "what is my opponent's plan?"

Why did hè do?

Did hè blunder?

Is king safe?

Check, take, threats?

Forks, skewers

1. What does that move did ?

2. Tactics ?

3. Does he threaten something ?

Ry92

1. What was that piece blocking before?

2. What is that piece blocking now?

3. Did he open up a weakness in my defense?

4. Should I block or attack?

5. Can I force a move based off his position now?

6. Will I be able to follow up in the next few turns if I make said move?

My strategy:

I try to keep my opponent on the move forcing as many unwanted moves as possible, while setting up good positions for attack and defense. There are always many options available when responding, the question is which one will be most rewarding.

Very nice lists of things to think about.

Some of them I remember to check out more often than others.  One I tend to forget is "What is my opponent's plan?"  That's probably because I'm over-identifying with my opponent ---figuring that since I don't have a plan, she doesn't either!  (Bet the word "she" caught you by surprise --- gotcha!)

The one thing mentionned that I almost Always think about is: Did she (or he) just move? Undecided

I often think "How could I be losing to this idiot?"

Laughing!

the adove mentioned checklists are all very helpful, but something i always forget is- "where's the mate?" it can get very tedious to try and calculate looking for a forced mate every move, we aren't computers- but if the position is "ripe" for such calculations it can often yield a win where you might otherwise have gone after material or whatever- so in blitz especially, a big part of the game is noticing when the position is "ripe" for such time investment (to calculate that is-). and that is what most of the previous post suggestions are actually trying to accomplish.

1. Huh?

2. Umm hmm

3. Oh yeah

4. Pffffffffffffffftttttt

(When i first reading the forum posts I used to be annoyed at the fact that many players shoot for humor and not give serious answers to the questions asked. However after reading the serious answers over and over until u pretty much can predict what they will say i now prefer the humorous ones.)

1. he/she can't do that can he/she?

2. who is this guy/gal?

3. oh oh.....can i survive this?

4.  ah ha! bet he/she is shocked at this suprise..... is it over?

motherinlaw

How about....

1. Where did that bishop come from?  It wasn't there before -- there's something wrong with this computer --- I should complain to management..

2.  OK, I'll Try to fork his rooks, but I Know he'll see that coming, and then I'll have to come up with some other lame plan ... what's the point, really?

3.  As God is my witness, I'll never bring my queen out this soon again!

Ah wonderful!  We have another convert! Smile

1  If that idiot does that "screwing the piece into the square" bit one more time, I'm gonna go complain to the TD.

2  Oh yeah, nice move, guy.  What the hell does it even do?

3  Okay, should I write my move down first and then play it, or play it first then write it down?  Is it even legal to write it down first anymore? (damn, I gotta read the rulebook when I get home).

4  Crap, I hung a piece.

5  And so what does he do?  He takes the piece.  This guy's so predictable (I have no respect for him at all).

Trolling is kinda like popcorn:  you can't have too much. Smile

I'd say you were lucky, Shadowknight:  at least it wasn't "Love To Love You Baby."  And I once had the knickknack paddywhack song going through my head for an entire afternoon (both rounds).  Suicide was looking pretty good, I must say.

And btw Donna was the Disco Queen (not dance queen):

Ah yes, the zany hippopotamus thingie.  I remember the first time a friend of mine brought that anecdote up to me (I couldn't believe it).

You'll definitely know you're on the right track when you're banned from chess.com. Then you won't even have to make good posts anymore.
