Yup, you got it, GoP.
Who am I!
Aha! The Sultan it is then.
We have a winner! Mir Sultan Khan, won both the All Indian Championship and the British Championship. And don't let the name fool you, he was the servant of Sir Umar. So long before Anand there was another great Indian player, unfortunately classism, rascism, and weather all conspired against him. He returned to India and faded into the sub-continent. Here he is making short work of the grand matron.
Still, Indians really should be used to conspiracies of weather.

No I'm not. Unfortunately I spent most of that time in a sort of coma, so it wasn't a very bright flash, I'm afraid.

OK an easy one.
'My wit is renowned. I was born in Russia, got shot for Austria, fought for the French, played for Poland, and raised money for a German. Who am I?'
nope, while i think he was born in russia, and had a vichy french connection, never heard of a poland or austria connection, and Alekhine was witty??
Tartakower?
We have a winner! Savielly Tartakower a man widely known for is wit, was born in Russia, fought for Austria in WWI and was shot in the stomach. At the outbreak WWII made his way to London and joined the free French forces under the name 'Cartier', after the war Tartakower became a French citizen and when Alekhine's desperate poverty became known he raised money for him on the spot (bear in mind with some justification Alekhine was accused of being a Nazi sympathizer and Tartakowers own parents had been killed during the one of the many anti-Jewish pogroms in Russia). He played for the Polish national team. Whew! Busy Guy!

The fact that he was able to serve under de Gualle is a testament to his character. De Gualle was notoriously difficult. Once he remarked to Churchill that the French people regarded him as 'the reincarnation of Joan of Arc', to which Churchill reminded him the English had to burn the last one...
Clue #2 'I may have been a master, but I was still a servant'
