By the way AndyClifton I did want to mention how this thread got started. There was a thread on the go here ( now locked ) about some High IQ people who were rather poor at Chess ( a puzzle to some of them I gather lol ). With all of the Geniuses over there getting in very deep I felt that a thread was needed for average folks. I know why I'm here in this thread but why are you here AndyClifton, hmmm ?
Still thinking about that maple syrup caper.
And cabby, there is always a thread about high IQ people here...whether they suck or are great or whether Fischer was or Kasparov, etc etc...
Naturally I am here (as always) to do everything I can to add to the general pandemonium.
Well I have noticed that you do visit quite a number of threads AndyClifton to share your expertise. It will be nice once we are able to determine what type of expertise that you do have.
Millions of people with average IQ suck at chess, because they prefer to do other things, like cooking, nitting, cycling,...
Thanks for the post Bronsteinitz. You make a very good point in that a lot of people don't have all that much time to devote to Chess. If they had more time who knows how far they could go with the game.

Well I do know that you have an important job here. I mean you are keeping an eye on a lot of threads to make sure that we are not going too far out there into Loonie-Tune Land ( can't be easy ).
whats an average iq?
I'm pretty sure average IQ is 100 and standard deviation is 10, with an approximately normal distrubation. So 145 means you have a higher IQ than 99.8% of the world's population. Although that somehow seems wrong.. it means that there are approximately many people with IQs over 170 as there are with IQs under 30.
Anyway, I have no idea what my IQ is, but I would hope that it is higher than average.. And I suck at chess.
There are so many categories of intelligence -- even if we only focused on "logical intelligence" or something of this nature, there are plenty of possible divisions within that. For instance, I am good at making logical conclusions based on an abstract statement (which often makes up a typical IQ question), but am terrible at those questions where you have to find the folding pattern that makes a 3D shape. It's a logical thing just like the former, and yet it's different enough that I'm great at one of the things and abysmal at the other.
And just because you have a 150 IQ doesn't mean you must be good in a specific subject, let's say physics for example. Granted you almost certainly have to be good at something "smart" to have such an IQ, but there are a lot of different intellectual topics other than physics. For example, philosophy, although intellectual like physics, is still ultimately quite a different thing, and so it still seems plausible that a smart person can be pretty good at one, but not so good at the other. Chess could be added to that mix to, as another ultimately different skill.
