Though I grew up with Bobby Fischer, the GOAT for me is "Kasparov". Beyond the obvious records and achievements, peak rating, and amazing breathtaking beauty of his style, Kasparov has "contributed" more to the development of chess by his tireless research, both of the game "AND" his peers. 
The amazing and informative "My Predecessors" speaks for themselves, to say nothing of the books on his titanic matches w/ Karpov, who is another in "my" top 10 greatest chess players of all time.
However, there is one caveat. What Bobby Fischer achieved when he rolled through the opposition in 1971-72, playing, and "winning" "19" match games without even allowing a draw before Iron Tigran cracked the block, is akin to pitching 3-4 "No-Hitters" in a row, and will "NEVER" be duplicated not even by Carlsen, who along with Kasparov and Fischer the greatest of them all.

Magnus Carlsen is goat for many reason

1) He is the only chess player to gain a highest rating of 2882

2)Magnus is one of the best player in endgame and also known as "ENDGAME GOD*

3)He had beaten a chess goat in his teenage who was in his elite form(Without taking any interest in that match)

4)Because he is Magnus
