I personally really like Tal... by sheer science though I'd say the 'strongest' player ever to play chess is Kasparov.
So in human vs. human battles - Tal
If chess were to ever be 'solved' the best in the 'presolved' era would be Kasparov

Topalov has inumerous wins on Kasparov.He is by far the best player nowadays..smashed Kramnik as if it was nothing.Topalov and Cheparinov make a powerfull team

Lasker was champ longest
Capablanca had the greatest winning percent
Either Morphy or Tal were the most dominant at their height
Kasparov probably in a complicated position
Petrosian was the one that was hardest to beat (especially in Olympiads)
Alekhine was probably the best when he was sober
But if we are saying the best of the best it has to be Fischer because he took on the whole Russian army and crushed them like a bug. If he had recognized he had severe mental illness and had gotten medicated with therapy, there would be no argument.
