Yawnnnnnnnn, somebody wake me up. Yet another reasonable player who could beat 85 % of the people on here raving about how they suck at chess. You are disrespectful to millions of players who can only dream of being an 1800 player. Yet you sit on here thinking that it is your right to become world class. Just face it, you are an 1800 ish player. You'll beat most of us but will never be a GM. Neither are you smart because you can win nor are you an idiot for not getting better. Bottom line, if you could be better, you would be better.

Lmaoooo no I'm not... like most ppl here, you looked at my chess.com blitz rating but not my recent game history. Recently I went on a huge slump and lost most of my games bc I hung pieces and stuff. I actually haven't played on chess.com in over a month bc it hurts my self esteem too much 😪

Remember, chess is a game, not your boring history book!

Play go. It's much more complex than chess. But you won't lose as most of the others don't know how to play it either.. grin.png

Oh, shut up, Mr. (or Ms.) Negativity! The person asked us how he could get better, and you're just making it worse, you dolt! He WAS better!

Hey there!

Believe me when I say to you that every human being has limitations: chess is not the exception.

There's nothing wrong with your rating and, I would say that your skills can improve if you work hard on it! But remember that everyone has his/her limit. There will be stronger players, and weaker ones than you! The best thing you can do is enjoying it, if not, you will never be happy with your chess.

Play over-the-board, analyze your games, solve tactic puzzles and watch or analyze masters' games and maybe, only maybe, you will improve a little.

I hung pieces and lost 63 rating points in my last OTB tournament so it seems like there's a lot I need to fix.

Lol, I'd like to think I'm decent at go, not great, but decent enough and trust me, whoever plays go is good at it, otherwise they won't spend time playing it. Unless you're just starting out...

Anyways, to answer the OP, based on your rating, you don't seem like a bad player, Everyone goes through slumps in chess, sometimes you just go on a bad run, like Jobava did recently. But if you're gonna stop playing because it will "hurt your self esteem" then you're just admitting that you have no self esteem. You shouldn't care if you win or lose, you gotta play chess to have fun, otherwise, what's the point in playing if all it causes is stress?

I didn't stop playing, I just stopped playing online. It's not only bad for my self esteem, but more importantly, it's also bad for my performance in OTB tournaments (especially blitz because it's a totally different time control.) Online chess is too addicting and for me, the negatives heavily outweigh the positives. Right now, I'm trying to focus on improving my OTB rating, and I'm still playing in a lot of tournaments.

I found this thread disheartening.  I actually am a horrible chess player and will undoubtedly never reach the level of play of the original poster.  She will always be way better than me.  That she will always be better than me is not what I find disheartening though.  What is disheartening is that if I were to ever take the game more seriously and improve, I fear I wouldn't be happy.  Prior to opening this thread, I was hoping I would some day get good enough to be 1500 or 1600 here on chess.com which I am guessing is 1200-1300 OTB (pure guess).   I thought I would be content with that but hearing someone at 1800 thinking they suck at chess, it just makes me wonder if I would just be that much more frustrated with myself if I got a lot better.

I also wonder if the OP would think she sucks if she got to 2200 because she cannot quite get over that next hurdle.   I didn't read the whole thread so I apologize if I am talking out of turn.  In other words, I don't know what her aspirations for the game are, how much she enjoys it, etc. etc.   .. but the first post hurt my morale concerning whether I will be happy being a decent chess player at 1500 (online not OTB) or so who can beat most random people.  That is all I want from myself.... until I get there, maybe?

VKclowncar

Also, I wish nothing but the best for the OP and hope she gets everything she wants from the game.

GM_chess_player

How do you have high rating when you say you suck at chess??

Blitz isn't that bad for OTB tournaments; I never had a coach, or extra money to waste on books, but I got to my current rating mostly by playing blitz games. Apart from studying, playing games is the way to improve, because you need to be able to apply what you learn on the board, and where better to do it than a meaningless blitz game. It doesn't make sense to study something and then wait till an actual tournament to see if you learned.

Anyways, I'm saying this because I went through the same thing, probably worse if you ask me. If you look at my blitz rating stats I was 1900ish at December 2014, and by June 2015 I was in the 1600s, but that online "slump" wasn't bad because even though I may have dropped like 300 points online, I got 2nd place in my High School State Championship during the same time (which not to brag or anything, but I could've won but I was scared of facing 2200s so I took draws in winning positions) and I gained about 150 USCF rating points. I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't give up on online chess just because it looks like it's not achieving results, just keep playing and enjoying the game. The results will eventually come.

If you never play OTB tournaments, you will always think you're good at chess. The more you play, the worse you think you are.

TBH I don't even enjoy online chess tho

While I'm here I guess I should say something relevant- looking at some of your previous posts it seems that you tend to focus on your negative tournament experiences rather than your (many, many) positive ones. Everyone has bad tournaments and slumps (i.e. my brother going from 2157-->2042 in a month). Why not talk about the NY International or Supernationals and say how awesome you are at chess? Rating is just a transient number and shouldn't be a primary concern. Once you trivialize rating it should hopefully be easier to enjoy chess.

Also, don't take comments from random blitz players to heart. They only call you bad to alleviate their own insecurities about their "skills"

I can't help it tho... I'm just obsessed about my rating. The main thing I'm afraid of is the possibility that I'll never make master.

I can name a bunch of promising youth players in the USCF expert range who quit in their college years and never made master... and I don't want that to happen to me.
