Coffee reminds me of my ex-brother-in-law in that the both appear to equate masculinity with risk-taking. I never understood why he thought his, or anybody else's, view of masculinity would be important to me. To me, that would be the pinnacle of beta-ness.

I gave coffee a hard time but I must admit that is a practical answer. as for the manliness or not of chess. in and of itself, it strikes me as a sport for real sissies and eggheads (I am the eggman).
but then you may want to ask yourself whether the acquisition of material goods, power, prowess in football or ping pong, accumulation of wealth equate to anything superior to a sense of well being and the richness on life that comes from the I-thou relationship with life described by Martin Buber for example.

...and you would be two levels removed from alphas, since you bottom feed on these theoretical beta males and do less than nothing by spending your time commenting on a game that you claim to be worthless and those who play it (apparently too dense to see the irony of wasting your time commenting on how others waste their time).
