👏 Nice story

ESP-918

The history of chess can be traced back nearly 1500 years, although the earliest origins are UNCERTAIN. The earliest predecessor of the game PROBABLY originated in India, before the 6th century AD; a minority of historians BELIEVE the game originated in China. From India, the game spread to Persia. When the Arabs conquered Persia, chess was taken up by the Muslim world and subsequently spread to Southern Europe. In Europe, chess evolved into roughly its current form in the 15th century.

Chess is chess. Does it matter where it originated?

In the May 2017 issue of Chess Life there is an article entitled : "The murky origins of chess; a theory that moves the origin of chess back from India to ancient Greece". The game that' s discussed is Pettia, an ancient war board game played by the Greeks.

If I remember correctly, GM Keene advocated this idea in one of his books. I thought he indicated that it was his idea.

Excuse me , but the link you provide as a preview it clarify that the modern form of Chess as we know it has it origin from the Indian " Chaturanga " . Perhaps there have been before other varietys resembling chess but none was close enough with similarities like Chaturanga. 64 squares! An archer resembling the Bishop, Elephants the Knights e.t.c

The modern chess has it origin in India.

Assuming that I am remembering correctly, I do not know why Keene believed that he had a contribution beyond what had been indicated by Murray. For those who are interested, I would suggest looking at Keene's book.

There is a reference to chess in the ancient Indian epic "Mahabharata" ; pls see http://www.stmoroky.com/games/chess/mahabharata.htm
