BLOCKING ADS? WELL PLAYED...

I don't mind ads in my newspaper or magazines.  Those won't own my computer with malware.

he point I was trying to make was chess.com could integrate the ads, serving them up from chess.com addresses, just like they do for every other image that gets displayed, in a manner that would make it hard they would be blocked. How crazy is that idea?

Very crazy.

But as you might have noticed that's not practical. Images are not served up from chess.com either but from images.chesscomfiles.com, which, in turn, is using CDNetworks (correct me if I'm wrong).

Right. So if the use of ad blockers becomes more widespread, more websites will host their own ads - and over time (I'm guessing now) - those self-hosted ads will become either more instrusive (watch this 90 second commericial when you first log in - no choice) or more integrated (your game brought to you by coke), or even presented as content - like we are seeing in other media - an "article" about how coffee makes you better at Blitz which in the fine print is sponsered by the Coffee Growers Association. (...)

I would be (unpleasantly) surprised if it happened.

After all, what is the point of running ads in the first place? To get people to buy your stuff, and make more money off it than you spent in ads. If someone uses an adblocker, there is a good chance that he is not interested anyways, so forcing him to see the ad is not going to increase your sales.

Said otherwise, if one person gets out of your advertising pool because he hates your face, you have not lost anything: you have less audience, but with higher rentability.

If it happens nonetheless, it means that even unwanted advertisment has a positive impact on sales - ie, that people are dumb as sheep. [EDIT: spam has little cost, so the benefit/cost ratio doesn't need much benefit to be profitable - the issue here is different]

That's a good (and logical) point.

However, let me tell you the truth. The way capitalizm works is to squeeze every last penny out of the sheep herds.

Thus, eventually you will buy a product they advertise, whether consciously or subconsciously - BANG - and they won!

On rare occasion I have inadvertently clicked on an ad. How else could internet porn end up on my computer.

There was a meme on the second page.

Oh! Indeed...well, someone bumped this seemingly very old thread recently and I had forgotten to look back when you typed your last comment. That's Grumpy Cat. I noticed that XGlorax913X or whatever his Alias here on Chess.com is (has a dog as is avatar) seems to use that one. A lot. But besides the point. Anyway! To explain the meme in a nutshell, Grumpy Cat is best used when someone is having difficulty, complaining about something or otherwise having a bad day and Grumpy Cat is pleased to know that said person (or topic at hand) is having such troubles. So looking back at page 2 the meme was used properly in this thread.

Hope I explained it correctly.

And I like Irontiger's response on post 110 by the way. Nicely done, sir.

Either pay the subscription or watch the adverts.

Cheapskates!

No. Fascist.

Do you know what fascist means? It isn't even remotely applicable in this context.

lol Was thinking the same thing.

Still, if advertisement had no impact on my decision to buy, they wasted money.

Yes, they wasted money, but, somebody had to gain it.

They wasted money and Google + chess.com + the tax system gained it.

So what? It's all a big conspiracy against me?

It is not from the malevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that I expect to be screwed, but from their regard to their own interest.

Avatar of Benzodiazepine

Just saying. The money isn't wasted.

It's spent and gained and diverted (to tax).

It's a consipracy. Conspiracy to murder, cold blooded murder.

Assassinated the few who fought this wrongful system.

Oh yeah, and a lot of you are missing the point.

Not running an adblocker is like leaving the keys in the ignition of your parked car.  These malverts will own your machine.
